Unlike other shaving soaps, Col. Conk comes in a 2.25 oz casket ready to be whipped up with a little water and a good badger hair brush. It produces a rich lather that spreads evenly across the skin, and a little goes a long way for daily shaves as I have seen with my fiance's morning rituals. Thickness and lather are just the right balance without feeling like a gel or dripping into the sink before you are done. The after effect is extremely smooth skin with a touch of a pleasant rum smell, which I (as a woman) find appealing.
I am surprised at how long the shaving soap lasts. My fiance hasn't gone back to a can since he received his first puck of the bay rum. Regular daily use required months to use it up completely. It maintained its quality up to the end when he ordered another. Unlike other shaving bars and soaps he has used in the past, Col. Conk's consistency requires less work to achieve the ideal lather and does not melt, solidify to a rock, or spill all over his shaving cup.
Want a gift certain to please and not be regifted or left in a drawer somewhere? Colonel Conk shaving soaps should be a contender for a thoughtful stocking stuffer or a great birthday present. For gentlemen, consider this an essential part of your personal grooming kit.
First off it takes time and patience to create the perfect lather also practice. I've been getting that down and it can be fun creating your own lather and brushing it on your face. There is a distinctive feeling of class shaving the old fashioned way but at the same time it can be considered a chore and time consuming when running late for an important meeting. When not in a rush it can be a relaxing and pleasurable process. A good badger hair brush can make a difference in the lather process.
The soap cakes are small about half the size of a jello cup and come in a thin plastic case suitable for travel. It's not water tight but as long as you wash the soap before storing it, it should be fine. I believe these should be small enough for airplane travel since the limit is 3 Oz and these are 2.25 Oz.
Second and my biggest concern about this soap, specifically the Bay Rum soap is the scent. Some say it has the scent of an old fashioned barbershop. That may be true but when I first received the soap I found it to be very masculine in scent but at the same time it reminds me of an old man. The Old Spice products have a scent that is distinctive to being used by older men and so does Col. Conk's Bay Rum Shaving Soap. At least this is my take on it. It smells like an old man and since I am not an old man I was not too fond of it's scent. After a few uses I have come accustomed to it and the scent has actually grown on me but if the scent reminds me of an old man then who's to say others won't think the same if they where to smell it on me? My sister is fond of perfumes but her one rule is that it cannot be a perfume that will make her smell like an old lady. I can finally relate to that.
I then tried the Lime version of the soap and it's become my preferred version. The scent is not as overpowering as the Bay Rum and definitely doesn't smell like an old man. Also the Lime soap is transparent which gives it a cool look while it's in the case. In the future I'd like to try the Almond and Amber versions. I already have a few weeks of using the soap and hardly made a dent in it. So it should last me a few months or even half a year or more.
I would recommend this soap but if you don't like the smell of an old man then I would suggest something other than the Bay Rum scent.

UPDATES: Here is some other additional information about this Soap since I've been using it.
I was on the lookout for a shaving mug or bowl to use with this soap. After trying out a coffee mug that was lying around in my kitchen, I've come to realize that I prefer not using a mug or bowl to pre-whip the lather. I get a better shave creating the lather on my face as it helps to maintain the beard wet while mixing the lather and to do strokes against the grain to help lift up the stubble for a better closer shave.
If I whip the lather in the mug with the soap inside, then I am using more soap than I need, wasting it faster. The soap cake comes in a thin plastic clam shell enclosure with a reusable lid. It's as if it was meant to remain in the enclosure and can easily open to add soap to your brush. So I've opted to do this instead of using a shaving mug. I run a small amount of water on the soap to loosen it then do a few strokes of my shaving brush and lather my face. I continue doing this until I finish shaving where I rinse it under the sink once again to clean it, re-close the lid and it's like new again. My point is that the plastic case can be used as the sole holder of the soap puck without the use of a shaving mug. I've tried Williams Shaving Soap and it comes in a small cardboard box. That one would require a shaving mug to store the soap.
Speaking of Williams Shaving Soap, I've also tried C.O. Bigelows Shaving cream as well so I can now do a few comparisons. Williams Shaving soap does not do a lather as good as Col. Conk's Soap plus it only comes in one scent which I am not too fond of. It's not bad or overbearing but it has more of a under the sink cleaning products smell where as Col. Conk's soaps have known scents like Lime and Almond. C.O. Bigelow, I found to be a little better than Col. Conk's Soap. It has menthol which adds a cooling effect to the shave plus I found that it's easier to create a lather with it compared to Col. Conks. The smell of C.O. Bigelow is not that great but it's not bad. Currently I think C.O. Bigelow (AKA Proraso Shaving Cream) is the best of the three, Col. Conk coming in Second and Williams in last place. But this is based on scents and lather production. I'll continue to use all three of them and see which gives the better shave.
One last thing to note is the difference in some of the Col. Conk Soaps. The Bay Rum soap says it contains Glycerin, Avocado Oil and Vitamin E. The Amber Soap doesn't mention Glycerin but does contain Avocado Oil and Vitamin E. The Almond soap has Glycerin, Avocado Oil and Vitamin E. Finally the Lime Soap contains Glycerin but it's Lime Glycerin and Aloe Vera.
So broken down, the Amber soap is missing Glycerin and the lime soap has Glycerin but it's Lime Glycerin and instead of Avocado Oil and Vitamin E, it instead has Aloe Vera. Lime soap is the only one with Aloe Vera. Probably not a big deal but I though I should point that out since its something I didn't notice at first and it might be of importance to someone else.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Been meaning to add another update for a long time. First off, thanks to people who found my review helpful and voted as such. I've since tried the Amber and Almond versions. I find Amber to be rather generic. It's not bad by any means but I find it to be the least inspired of the bunch. Almond is now my favorite. Has a sweet bread like scent. And I'm a sucker for sweet aromas as can be seen by my scented candle collection. I've since bought many of the Almond soaps. Although the point of this update isn't about the soaps. It's actually the lack thereof.
Now with a few years under my belt with wet shaving experience I have resorted to shave without the use of any soap lathers. I have come to realize that the lather acts as a thin layer between the skin and the razor. This means that when shaving against the grain, it would not shave as close as physically possible. I would feel around my face and everything felt as smooth as can be, but once I washed off the remaining soap residue and felt around, I could feel very very tiny stubble that I could not feel before washing off the soap. I was not getting as close a shave as possible while using lather. I had to do a few more strokes to get the very tiny stubble that remained while only having water on my face and nothing more. Because of this, I don't even bother with shaving creams anymore. I simply shave after being in the shower and having let my beard soak for ten minutes or more.
Of course I don't recommend this for anyone else as shaving without lather can lead to skin irritation specially if you don't know what you are doing. Since I am already very proficient with wet shaving using my safety razor, I no longer have any sort of skin irritation afterwards even though I shave without lather. Although it could be possible that I am not getting a close enough shave with lather simply because I am not doing it properly. But regardless I kind of prefer latherless shaving since it frees up a few valuable minutes for me each morning.
As for the remaining Almond soaps, I've been using them as bath soaps just for the scent. I'm sure the ladies find the scent of sweet bread irresistible. :D
There may be better soaps. I don't know, because I haven't tried any of them. But beginners to wet shaving can't go wrong with this one. As others have said, shaving is an individual thing, so try different soaps, blades, and after shave treatment until you find what works best for you--personal experiences are not meant to be mass produced, but should be intimately individual. After all, one of the best things about being a grown man is embracing your responsibility to make decisions that are uniquely right for you.
