These DE blades are amazing. and rating is 10/10. The 100 pack I received was made in Russia and they have numbers stamped on them ( 1,2,3,4). The new version is made in India( those astra blades are not stamped with numbers). Thanks Astra. Keep in mind I tested this blade on a Merkur 34c safety razor. This is probably would require only 1 pass as it is efficient and on 3 days of beard stubble. I did 2 passes and the second pass barely had any hair to shave off. I want to try this on my Rockwell 6c in the near future.

2.0 out of 5 starsNot good at all for me
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2022
To avoid the "worked great for me, don't know what your problem is!!" responses, I will begin by noting that razor blade experience certainly is very dependent on a number of factors including your facial shape, skin texture, skin sensitivity, hair growth pattern, hair coarseness, etc. I am well aware that a razor which is terrible for one person is the best razor ever for the next guy. That said, I will do what everybody should do in reviews, that is, writing it to reflect MY experience. I don't intend to try to guess at what "most people" might experience and write for that viewpoint. The following is therefore MY experience.

This blade is really not a good experience for my skin/face/whisker profile. It was the second blade I bought after having tried a pack of Derby blades (similarly unsatisfactory outcome), and then I went through several sampler bundles and found a few blades that are *AWESOME* for me, some that are "very good", and then the range down to "pretty bad experience", which is where this one falls for me.

After having used it for a few months with multiple nicks every time I shave, a lot of irritation, and the blade getting even worse after each shave so that even by the 3rd shave it's really unbearable, I went through the sampler packs, used a couple of the other blades that were amazing for me (the Voskhod and the Indian made Gillette branded Wilkinson Sword) for a couple of years with great satisfaction, I got these Astra Superior Platinum blades back out of the bottom drawer to try again, thinking maybe having gotten much better at DE wet shaving might have made a difference in how I would experience these blades.

So with the two best for me, I get a baby-smooth shave with pretty much no irritation almost every time, and nicks/cuts are not something that happens in 4 or 5 places on my face every single time I shave -- in fact, I rarely have any at all unless I just got careless somewhere. Somehow I can pass over some places very carefully with this blade and still end up with a couple of blood spots popping up from it. Anyway, getting these blades back out recently and then trying to use a blade just once before discarding sometimes, or maybe 2 or 3 times for others (thinking maybe the coating wearing off might help the sharpness, but it didn't matter) and using these in rotation with the others I prefer for a couple of months was not very different from my earlier experience. So now I'm still left with a bunch of these blades which I will either throw away or give away. Anyway, I'd use a Wilkinson Sword or Voskhod one day and get a good shave then an Astra SP the next and get a miserable outcome. Very consistent, too.

I will be clear that your mileage could vary, and clearly this blade is rated 4.5 stars because for every unfortunate one like me who gets a terrible shave out of these, there are enough to maintain a very high average who have either truly had a great experience with the same blade or it's the only thing they've ever used and they just assume that's as good as it gets. I'll charitably assume the former.

At least they're very inexpensive, just $8 and some change for 100 of them, so you're not really out much money to try them and it will probably work far better for you than it did for me, but take this review as a heads up that it also might not be a good experience and if you try them and your face is burning and bleeding and you still have rough patches, you're one of the 5% who aren't compatible with these blades, and so move on. Even better, if you're new at this or deciding to go try some things, search Amazon for some of the DE blade sampler packs and get some packs that have a couple of each of a bunch of different blades. Even different offerings from the same company can be quite different. Gillette has some blades that were pretty rough on me and others that were amazing.

Just be clear that I don't have a vendetta against this particular brand, which even happens to be a Russian subsidiary of Gillette, the maker of the Wilkinson Swords I love, and it's not that it's Russian either because my absolute FAVORITE blade is the Voskhod, also a Russian blade. And even for Astra, there is another variation called the "Superior Stainless" which is an uncoated blade which feels like it's quite a bit sharper and maybe has some other features that are different, because while that blade isn't as good for me as my two go-to choices, it's still "very good" and I do get a satisfying shave out of it -- just slightly more irritation, but not excessive. I do really like THAT blade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharpness + Longevity + Smoothness = Perfection (for me)
Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2018
Size: 100 Count (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
Astra Superior Platinum is a formerly Czech brand now manufactured in St. Petersburg Russia by Gillette-owned Petersburg Products International. (Edit: They're now manufactured in India, but worry not because I can tell you the new blades shave every bit as good as the old ones.) It's one of those blades you wouldn't give a second look due to more popular and/or "respected" brands such as Feather or Personna, but the fact of the matter is this is one of the absolute best values to be had in wet shaving at around a dime per blade. I ordered my 100 count box from Super Safety Razors and am pleased to say they're the genuine article as well as newer manufacture. Each blade is secured to its single wax paper envelope with two centrally placed wax dots that aren't nearly as sloppy as what you'd commonly see on a Gillette Silver Blue. Each retail carton contains 20 tucks of 5 blades each, with a perforated slot near the bottom which can be torn out if so desired for easier dispensing.

Just to give you some context, I have the dreaded combination of a very coarse beard with sensitive skin, so multiple passes are risking a lot of irritation and ingrown hairs. I first used these in a Merkur 34C and found them to be less tuggy with a more consistent sharpness than GSBs, but they unfortunately did not make the HD a more efficient shaver for me. I've since switched to a Parker 87R with a bit more blade exposure, and that, I feel, is what brought out the best qualities of these blades. I can consistently achieve two pass DFS's (or Damn Fine Shaves) with the Astra SP and the Parker with virtually no irritation whatsoever. They slice through my heavy/coarse beard with ease and plenty of audible feedback, and I can get about three, maybe four shaves from them before I feel like they're not cutting as well as they did when new. Of course, YMMV based on your facial hair type and shaving techniques. I highly, highly recommend pairing them with a razor that has more blade exposure to get the most out of them, however. (Edit, 4/25/18: Many shaves later, I'm still swearing by these blades. Remember when I said they have a consistent sharpness? That's what keeps me coming back to Astra SP. I LIKE that these blades start out at a decent sharpness which SLOWLY and predictably changes over time without requiring you to modify your technique. No break-in period like GSB or Pol Silver, just smooth, consistent shave after shave without any surprises, and you'll know when it's time to replace the blade long before it feels like a dull steak knife; alum blocks never lie.)

The only caution I have to offer is that while these blades seem to be the perfect trifecta of sharpness, longevity, and smoothness, that smoothness can and will lull you into a false sense of security if you're not careful, as I learned much to my dismay. I rushed through one of my shaves one day and got rewarded for my impatience with some painful nicks and weepers that made me yelp loudly. Make no mistake: These blades are wickedly sharp, and it's not unheard of for them to be referred to as a poor man's Feather on various shaving forums.

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I pretty much consider these my grail blade. They work exceptionally well for me and give me comfortable, consistent and EFFICIENT shaves with minimal irritation in my Parker TTO. My advice to you would be to get a smaller pack of these to try out, see if they work well for you, and then spring for the 100 count pack. You won't save as much in the short term, but if they end up not being what you expected, you won't have a bunch of razor blades to give away or throw out. Then again, I'll happily accept any unwanted blades still sealed in their original cartons/tucks and dispose of them for you free of charge. Just pay shipping and handling! :P

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tried and Trusted Companion for Shaving
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024

My husband has used the razor blades since he started shaving 10+ years ago.

Quality and Durability:
One of the most notable qualities of Astra Platinum blades is their exceptional build quality. They work so well and for a very long time. We do not have to buy blades often at all because so many come in one pack.

Sharpness and Precision:
Astra Platinum blades excel in delivering a close and precise shave, thanks to their sharp edges and precision-engineered design. My husband has thick hair that he has tried to use other razors for, but nothing has gotten him a clean shave like these.

Value for Money:
One of the most appealing aspects of Astra Platinum blades is their excellent value for money. Each pack comes with a generous supply of blades, which can last for an extended period, often up to a year depending on usage frequency. This makes them a cost-effective option for individuals seeking high-quality shaving performance without breaking the bank. Additionally, the longevity of these blades further enhances their value proposition, making them a wise investment for long-term use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp and affordable

These are nice, individually wrapped blades that are sharp and provide a good, close shave. It takes some practice to get it right when moving from other forms of shaving; personally, I was shaving WAY too fast coming from the refillable safety razor side. These blades also work in my straight razor: while still in the paper sleeve, they are scored and can easily be snapped in half.

I've seen some comments regarding how to determine which side was used or how often the blade should be changed. Obviously if you have a rough shave, it's probably time to replace. But some wisdom from my grandfather: draw a line down the center of your face (or body, if you're using it for other parts) and every time you cross the line flip the razor. You'll get roughly the same wear on both sides. Pop in a new blade as needed, for me 1-2 times per week.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Razors.... $0.10 each!
Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2017
Verified Purchase
I decided to upgrade my morning routine and give myself something to look forward to when I'm feeling lazy and thinking about sleeping in. I also felt like it was time to stop using an electric razor since it was leaving me with a very amateur-looking shave (lots of stray hairs that I couldn't get no matter how much I tried). I wanted to get the most out of the safety razor experience, so I did a lot of research into which products are needed and how to use them. I made all of the purchases together on Amazon and tried them out as a set. After using an electric for the past 10 years, I was pretty worried that I would get some serious razor burn, but to my surprise I had none whatsoever! I was pretty careful to not get too aggressive with the shaving, so I went WITH the grain and only made one or two passes on each area. The result was a shave that was 100X closer than an electric with no discomfort, nicks, cuts, or razor burn!

Here's what I bought and why:

Safety Razor: Parker 96R – Long Handle Butterfly Safety Razor
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IFFSOS/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_2
This safety razor has a great weight to it, a long handle for a comfortable grip, and a black and chrome coloring that looks great with the other items on the list. The butterfly razors seem to be the easiest to open and close for changing blades.

Razor Blades: Astra Superior Premium Platinum blades
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EXPTR0W/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_4
One of the great things about safety razors is that the blades are SUPER cheap. These Astra blades are some of the most popular and highest quality blades I could find. At $0.10 each, you can clearly see the cost advantage to regular razors. I have been told that one blade should last about a week. That means that 100 is nearly 2 years’ worth! Do yourself a favor and buy the best blades you can get. There’s no reason to save a few cents to get blades that dull quickly and give you razorburn.

Brush: Perfecto 100% Badger Shaving Brush - Black
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VF1NI5M/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_40
This brush is a fraction of the cost of the higher end brushes and it felt GREAT and worked up a nice, foamy lather very quickly. I don’t see any reason to buy a more expensive brush, especially if you are just starting out and want to see if you enjoy this process before you commit to a high-dollar brush. Personally, I still wouldn’t get anything more expensive.

Bowl: Schöne Stainless Steel Shaving Bowl with Lid
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OQDEL8Y/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_37
I think this is a matter of preference and taste in aesthetics. This bowl matches the other items that I bought and has a lid, which I am hoping will allow me to make my soap last longer. It seems to be well made and is a great size for working up a lather with the brush and is shaped well for holding it in your hand while you apply the lather. I think there are a lot of options for you to choose from, so pick something that matches your style if this one isn’t for you.

Razor and Brush Stand: SimplyBeautiful Deluxe Razor and Brush Stand
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AG92BXY/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_35
This stand looks great and is balanced well so that it holds my brush and razor without falling over. I chose black for two reasons. One: It matches the other things that I bought (razor and brush). Two: It should resist rusting better since it is coated.

Pre-shave Oil: The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil, Sandalwood
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FGTTTM/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_3
The Art of Shaving makes some great products, but some of them have changes in recent years, so you can’t rely on the ratings alone. I read through them and found that the pre-shave oil is still a very popular product and from my experience, it definitely helps prep your beard and skin for the shave. Applying the oil is step 1 in safety razor shaving.

Shaving Soap: Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007MW2ZW/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1
TOBS shaving soaps are the highest quality soaps I could find based off of smell, quality of lather, and consistency of the product quality. This soap is more like a cream. I scooped out some with my fingers, put it in the bowl, added some hot water, and then worked up a lather. It felt and smelled amazing! In reality, I didn’t want to wash it off because it just felt so good!

After-shave Balm: Truefitt & Hill Sandalwood Aftershave Balm
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004OWPW0I/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_29
This was my biggest splurge of the whole set-up and I did so for several reasons: First, using after-shave balm is said to be gentler on your skin than alcohol-based after-shaves. As I mentioned before, I switched from an electric to a safety razor with no skin irritation at all. This cream soothes the skin and makes it soft. It was the perfect way to finish my shave. Second, this stuff is rated as the absolutely best smelling after-shave balm out there and I can attest to that. It smells so great that I stopped using my cologne. Based on the small amount that is needed, this bottle should easily last for a year or more. Three, there are other “luxury” brand shaving balms that have been bought out by big brand companies and their formulas have changed significantly as a result. That means that some of the products out there have great ratings, but only because of the number ratings BEFORE they recently changed. If you look into other luxury shaving brands, then you will see what I mean.

Razor Disposal Case: Feather Styling Razor Disposal Case
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DWGEY1K/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_36
Even used razors are sharp, so I bought this little case to keep stray razors off of the counter, or better yet, off of the floor. Just drop in the used razor when it’s too dull for shaving. It holds over a hundred, so you can go without emptying it for a few years. It’s pretty cheap, so maybe you can just throw it away when it’s full? Your choice.

That’s my whole set up. If you want to get into safety razor shaving, then I highly recommend the products on this list. All-in-all, you will spend about the same on this list than you would on a TAOS starter kit that only has the oil, brush, soap, and balm. I’m a morning shaver, so the sandalwood scent works great for me, but evening shavers may consider the same products in lavender scent if you want a relaxing experience to help you sleep.

B
5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp but not too sharp, very comfortable shaves
Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2013
Size: 100 Count (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
TL;DR — These are my go-to blades for great, close shaves at an unbeatable price.

Here is my review of the blades I've tried. There are a lot of sampler packs on Amazon, but after doing some research I chose to order around 30 each of just a few different blades to try, avoiding all of the lesser-quality "filler". I'll compare here and there to Mach-3 blades since that's what I previously used before switching to electric, and now this.

First off, Derby is what came with my razor. These you can practically rake across your face any way you see fit. They aren't very sharp, on par with a Mach-3 that's been used a few times. Shaving requires more strokes which leads to more irritation, especially on the neck. That said, I'd say these are a good blade if you're super worried about cutting yourself, because it's practically impossible. But even beginners might want to look elsewhere as these blades kind of ruin the "shaving experience". Don't be disappointed if you just bought this razor and have only tried these blades! Keep reading...

I ordered a 100-pack of Astra SP Platinum (that's Astra Superior Premium Platinum, not the regular stainless) since it's under ten bucks at the time of this writing. These are great. Beginners, start here. They're sharp enough that you don't have to press the razor against your skin—which you shouldn't have to! You're supposed to let the weight of your razor do the work as you guide it along your face in short strokes. So naturally, these are sharper than Mach-3 blades, but if you do press a little, you probably won't nick yourself. I love these blades because for me, they're comfortable enough for everyday use and provide good, close shaves at a very inexpensive price. Easy on my neck with care. My go-to blade. Great for beginners and pros alike, and eligible for Subscribe & Save!

Wilkinson Sword Classic seem to be great blades for people who have their technique down pretty well. Compared to Astra SP Platinum, they are sharper. They provided the best shave of the lot, but I did nick myself here and there on my neck and below my chin the first time around. Do not push these blades against your skin. It doesn't take much mastery to use these, and they're worth working up to. Downside: more than twice the price of Astra SP Platinum. I'll keep some of these around for days when I want the closest shave possible, or I just feel like something different. If you're new to traditional shaving or think Mach-3 blades are sharp, maybe don't start here, but definitely try them out.

Feather "New Hi Stainless" Platinum Coated blades are exactly what the reviews say: sharp. My first shave I got a good amount of nicks, but my second I had almost none. I adapted well, and you have to; each brand is a little different and the best require good technique, but some are more forgiving than others. These are negligibly sharper than the Wilkinson Sword Classic but they aren't forgiving at all and I didn't achieve any better of a shave. They're incredibly sharp compared to a Mach-3 blade. At 2x the price of the aforementioned and more than 3x the price of Astra SP Platinum, I won't be keeping these on hand, but your mileage may vary. If you only want the sharpest blade around, this is it. Fun fact: these come ten to a pack instead of five.

In conclusion, I'm sticking with Astra SP Platinum for regular use and Wilkinson Sword Classic when I'm up for something sharper. I shave every other day, and either is priced reasonably enough that if I want, I can use each side of a blade just once for a fresh edge every shave. That's about a 100-pack every year, so do the maths on price. Of course, both brands last much longer than this if you're looking for even better value.

I've used a handful of different DE blades, and these are by far my favorite. They are sharp, they last me three to five shaves (I typically change them more often than I really need to), and they are very affordable at the time of writing.

The only other blade I've tried which was comparable to these were the Feather, and those are super expensive and I did not experience a significantly more enjoyable shave with those.

And, in case anyone was wondering about this particular product, the box I received was manufactured in India as expected, rather than in Russia, and they still lived up to the hype.

When this box runs out, I plan on re-ordering.

Manny Weber
5.0 out of 5 stars Indian Astra SP - still an excellent blade
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024
Size: 100 Count (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
I just finished my comparison between the Indian and Russian Astra SPs, as the Russian ones were my good old go-to blade and was concerned about having to find a different one.

For my testing, I used Stirling Bay Rum shave soap, face-lathered with my G5C Synthetic fan brush, and used my Merkur Progress. I did three 3-pass shaves with the razor set to 4 for the WTG and XTG passes and 3 for ATG, except for the third shave where I was distracted before starting and forgot to reset it, so all passes were at 3 for that one. Doh!

I shave daily. The first three shaves were with the Indian Astra SP. Then I had a "reset" shave, still with the same soap but an Omega boar brush, and a Weber SS PH razor with a Personna X-series blade. This was what I shaved with the day before I started this testing, so that way the next round would start the same way. Then I went back to the Progress with the Russian Astra SP for three shaves, using the same settings as the first time including the "all 3" on the last shave.

And the results - both blades gave me essentially the same excellent shave. Both seemed smooth and sharp enough to mow down my spiky and coarse "older guy" salt and pepper whiskers with no nicks, weepers, or irritation. Both gave me the same little to no feedback from the alum block.

Are there differences between the blades (other than markings)? Is one sharper than the other? Is one smoother than the other? I don't know as I can't tell those particular nuances between them. My shaves were equal, and that is what matters to me.

As for the longevity of each blade. For me it doesn't really matter as I ditch a blade after 3 shaves anyway - I find that I usually get diminishing returns after that and it isn't worth chasing an extra shave or two, probably sub-par, in order to save a cent or two. Blades are cheap.

So, I still have my go-to blade, the Astra SP. And, I have 99 more Indian made to go to. (In addition to the Russian ones I have left).

I've been wet shaving for several years now and after my initial trial and error with several different brands of blades I settled on Timor blades that have treated me very well since. Having ordered a massive amount of them as soon as I fell in love with them, I recently found myself going into my drawer for the next sleeve of them to find that I have just a few razors left. Taking a look at ordering more I see that they've become quite difficult to get in any quantity so I had to find a new option. Years ago when I was trying razors I skipped right over these Astra razors because they actually seemed too cheap to be any good in my mind, how foolish I was. Looking at my options now I just popped in the search and sorted by the customer reviews to see what WE thought were the very best razors. Without question there is a clear winner there by a HUGE margin and this is her, the Astra Superior Platinum, so I put in an order for 100 blades at the bargain basement price of like $8 - just amazing. They came very well packaged in an easy to manage and store box of boxes of 5, when it came time to shave I was still apprehensive about trying a new razor after years loving the Timor razors. Taking the razor out of the wrapper it seemed somehow "fatter" I guess is the best way to describe it than the Timor razors I was used to as well as far more flimsy, not an excellent first impression at all there. I still made sure to do the rest of the ritual I've come to love so much heating up my mug in the hot water before pulling it out and setting it on the counter with just about 2 inches of hot water left inside and the outer reservoir filled to keep the inside nice and toasty, in went my beloved Merkur 38C and silvertip badger brush so they could start getting nice and toasty, off came the top of my new favorite Sir Hare tallow based shaving soap (previously Cella which is also excellent, tried Sir Hare wanting tallow to be more prevalent and after my first go stocked right up, order from their official page for better deals and selection of majestic scents). I do my business as usual, flick the excess water from my now warm brush and load it up with soap before I add just a few drops of water to the brush itself and build a glorious warm tallow later on my face that is one of the very best feelings there is. Now I'm ready, razor and blade have been sitting in the hot water for a few minutes and my face is a creamy tangled landscape ready to do battle with a new foe. From the very first stroke of the blade I knew I'd made a horrible mistake years ago, it was magnificent the effortless destruction to two days of growth. Not only did the blades give me a replacement for the Timor blades I've used for years, they greatly improved the experience of the shave we all love so much. After another week of this to make sure it wasn't a fluke, I went ahead and stocked up on these blades to a point where I'll never need to order another blade again. Heck, the next generation of my family may not need to order another blade ever again and it was just a few bucks, seems unreal. These blades go above and beyond to provide the luxurious shave that we rely on to pull us out of bed every morning and I really can't say enough good things about them, out of the box they don't have the look or feel that I was used to but once in the razor they take me places I never knew I wanted to go. If you're just now thinking of getting into wet shaving absolutely do not hesitate to give these wonderful blades a try along with any others you are trying, they will without question not let you down. Please do invest a bit more in a quality razor, this cannot be said enough. Anything at all Merkur can be trusted and relied on, they have razors for any price point so there is for sure no reason for this to be why the experience isn't everything that it can be. Your brush choice is far less important, a $5 synthetic brush will be just fine as long as it feels good on your skin and builds the lather you're looking for. If you're looking for an option that suits the best of both worlds you can get an incredible silvertip badger brush for around $30 if you do some looking. For your soap choices there are more options than there are days in the year, I've tried over 100 of them and every single time come back to tallow based options being hands down the best many times over. Cella is a great option for getting started here, as I mentioned previously the Sir Hare line of shaving soaps are my absolute favorite after years of trying different options. They offer several different fantastic scents at their official page and shipping is just a couple dollars, their containers are also over-sized so you can load your brush there without any extra mug or dish and lather right on your face. Make sure to get a stand for your brush and razor as keeping them well taken care of and dry is by far the most critical piece to keeping them happy and healthy for years to come. Some folks are put off by the seeming initial cost of wet shaving, but if you stand even the VERY best of wet shaving needs up against the yearly cost of shaving with Mach-5 (or whatever) blades and your spray cans of cream, ours comes out to literal pennies. It's so very much cheaper and the quality of the shave just isn't even fair to compare, it's laughable. Before I tried wet shaving I used to look like a mountain man, seriously hated shaving. Wet shaving has made it something that I truly look forward to every single day, everything about it is an experience that so very many men are missing out on thanks to the 5 blade garbage and spray cans that have been hammered into our minds for a generation. Shaving is your time for yourself and with these tools and just the smallest amount of trial and error you will feel like a king every single time you step up to your sink. I wish I hadn't shaved yet today.
