However, others say that it's not suitable for cutting tall grass, or weed stems longer than a certain length. The mower does not come pre-assembled, you have to put the pieces together yourself. The instructions that come with it are great and I think we had this put together in about 5-10 minutes.
This reel mower does a great job at cutting the normal grass. We do have weeds called "seed grass" here, and this mower doesn't cut those down very well, but neither does our other mower.
This mower is easy to push. The grass catcher is pretty nice to have. Once the catcher starts getting a bit full, the grass tends to just pile up in the front portion of it, which is a bit of a pain. We are using the clippings to start a compost pile to use as fertilizer for our garden next year.
I did read that several people seem to have issues with their clippings bag falling off. Another reviewer here left a great solution to this issue and using their method, we've had no problems with the bag coming off at all.
One thing I dislike about this mower is that it really does not handle sticks well at all. A stick about the thickness of a chopstick will completely stop this thing in its tracks. This gets kind of annoying when you're booking along at a pretty good pace then all of a sudden the mower locks up and you have to double step a bit lol. However, it's easy to remove the stick from the blades and get back to business.
Overall, nice mower for a smaller area. Great not to have to worry about gas, oil, or any of that stuff. I'm pretty happy with this purchase!
It is easy enough to learn to maneuver but does take some skill you cant just push it about like a gas mower with little care. Once you get the hang of it (maybe 5-10 minutes) its fast and the results are good. I did both my front and back yard in 40 minutes (I wasn't running the whole time I walked a bunch to I just wanted to test it out), and with the gas mower it took this same amount of time; but I would have to empty the clipping bag 4 times. My lawn was pretty over grown by the time I got this (three weeks growing) and it mowed my grass without issue. It got clogged maybe 4 times over all even with how thick my lawns was. It was easy to clear just be careful.
Only real con is maybe the clipping bag which I did not bother with (reason for 4/5 stars), and the fact that this will not cut weed/invasive heavy stem plants in your lawn. I had to cut into these from two to three angles or just remove them by hand (which was honestly easy and they need to be gotten rid of anyway). Its not a gas mower that sucks the grass/stems into the cutting blades. If you have a lot of weeds I would pass on this mower unless you plan on removing them.
I've maintained the mower with a wipe of machine oil over the blades after every use (carefully...), and an occasional shot of lubricant in the wheel housings. So far, the only signs of wear are some accumulated grass stains on the business end and a random tear in the grippy foam on the handle. It fits nicely in a very small plastic Rubbermaid shed when not in use.
The grass catcher is well built but ultimately laughable. It holds so little, and is so smooth on the bottom, that the grass trimmings are either falling out or you're stopping to empty it again. I find that just mulching the clippings is a speedier option, and the mower mulches efficiently enough that the lawn never looks littered with clippings (even after tackling a badly overgrown space).
If you're expecting the one-pass performance of a power mower, you'll be disappointed. However, if you're prepared to make a couple of passes and -still- find a stray weed or two that managed to evade the reel, then I'd recommend this mower. All in all, it does an exceptionally good job of creating a beautifully manicured lawn (despite the occasional strays). I love the sound of the spinning reel, I love the ease with which the mower glides over the lawn, and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that it makes mowing a pleasure for me.
