My experience with DE razors wasn't that great - prior to this Merkur, I had a fixed settings razor. Getting cut, or a razor burn was common. In short, it wasn't used a whole lot.
After reading a lot of reviews of the adjustable razor, decided to splurge and try that out. My first attempt was at level 4 - and it was no better than the fixed razor. After that initial disappointment, I gave it another attempt - this time at the lowest level. And I was immediately impressed. I was genuinely surprised by how smoothly that went. I get a shave as close as a cartridge blade, with almost no razor burn. I do have to go slowly, let the weight of the razor do the work as opposed to applying hand pressure. This has made shaving somewhat less of a pain. And no razor burn. I am using this razor with the Derby Premium blades (approx $10 for 100 blades) so it's a very cost effective solution.
Overall, I am very pleased with this razor; the build is very nice (I got the chrome edition), the heft is substantial which makes it easy to control. The price is definitely on the higher side, but I think you get what you pay for - a quality product which should last me a long time. And I think within a year I will recover the cost in savings on blades.
Pros:
Perfect finish. The shiny chrome is just perfect for me, it's gorgeous and functional. Grip is fine, after a couple of uses I haven't had any issues whatsoever.
Perfect action. I didn't realize the cap of the razor "pops" off, which is a bit unusual, but I'm sure I'll get used to it and it looks built to last. Bottom line, putting a blade on is quick and easy. Twisting the handle to select your "aggressiveness" is easy, higher number is harsher.
Perfect shave. I started off with a 1 to quickly knock off some hair, and it was easily the most gentle DE shave I've ever had. Lovely. Higher settings go as high as I ever want to go, as my favorite Feather blades are plenty sharp as always.
Cons:
High initial investment. Actually in recent years, the common razors make DE look cheaper than ever. As of writing, you can get this beautiful razor that will last longer than your lifetime for less than the cost of a few months' worth of the popular top-of-the-line disposable alternative. It's barely even a choice- switch to DE, save money.
Weird loading. Although the action of the cap is smooth, it's weird to "pop off" the top. My last razor had the "butterfly" open, which feels much more solid, with much less possibility for injury. Look up a video before you do this with a real blade.
Reference (my kit):
I put Feather blades in my razor, the "samurai swords" of the shaving world. My brush is a cheap but effective Tweezerman, and my shave soap alternates between handmade soaps and VanDerHagen. My current stand and bowl are actually from a VdH kit.
Overall, I can't recommend this razor highly enough. Merkur is like the Mercedes Benz of shaving. Generally sleek, stylish, technically wonderful. My only note would be- throw the included blade in the trash, or use it for projects. Merkur blades are usually garbage. I recommend Derby HD blades for beginners, and Feathers for pros.

In my naivety I had first gone to a few pharmacies looking for the equivalent of my old Gillette adjustable razor. Nothing because they are under the spell of the cartridges and the Gillette razor blades on offer there are made in Russia. Only German or Japanese steel or U.S. if available rate in my eyes for razor blades, so I have stocked up on Feathers Made in Japan. Regrettably reviews of Merkur razor blades indicated the ones available are from Czechia and were highly critical of them. I would be very open to Made in the U.S.A., which is what I was looking for in the first place. And I bought myself a stainless steel Rex Ambassador adjustable razor Made in the U.S.A. at a great price from Amazon Canada for my house in Florida. Why not another Merkur Futur? Concerns about longevity that arose from reviews by users daily snapping off the top and finding the holding studs wear down after about two years. Presumably not made of steel. I do not need to snap off the top plate daily, which should prolong the life of the razor for me significantly on this particular issue. The Rex adjustable razor is very much like the Gillette I remember.
A few things first. As soon as I asked for a clarification before ordering, the seller increased the price by over 5%. The seller also failed to reply to my straight question, that was regarding the difference between the two models of the same company they were selling right here. Also, the price is way more than the $75 on the website. However, if the seller pays import duties then it’s genuine.
Coming back to the product, I have been using it for more than seven months. I used Parker adjustable before this for six months and to begin with that felt good. However, as I wrote in my review there that it’s third piece (it’s supposed to be two-piece) got detached and could never fit properly again so I had to discard it. It was a big loss of money.
I also use Parker blades on Merkur. If you don’t shave against the grain, one blade may last you a couple. I use them thrice comfortably. This razor, I have the adjustable model with nice chrome sheen, is a top press clip on one. I have used it on setting 1 mostly but now experimenting with 3. As one gets used to applying lower pressure at higher numbers, shaving quality improves tremendously. It feels good on grip but it’s too smooth so I wipe the handle often to keep it dry so it doesn’t fall off accidentally. I am more scared of denting my expensive wash basin.
If you can afford it, go for it because the weight of the razor is perfectly balanced to glide smoothly on the skin and give burn free close shave. I like it better than the Parker’s.
