Contrary to the assertions of many reviewers, there are only a few relevant factors in choosing a safety razor: A) blade exposure, angle, and gap; B) handle weight and shape; and C) durability.
This review will compare the Parker Long Handle Super Heavy (iii), to the Merkur Long Handle 3 Piece (i), Short Handle 2 Piece (ii), and Futur (iv). A few comments on the Merkur Progress and Parker Variant will be made at the end.
i) Is the least aggressive of the four. So little of the blade is exposed, and it is at such a shallow angle and with so little spacing between the safety bars, and it is so light, that I cannot get a with-the-grain shave without either applying pressure or making multiple passes. Either way, for someone with a moderate to heavy beard, this razor may give you irritation. It is, however, a great candidate for travelling, since the 3 pieces mean it disassembles flat.
ii) Is the second least aggressive. I get a good shave after one with- and one against-the-grain pass, and a very close shave after a second against the grain pass. However, it is still light enough that I need to apply pressure while going over the thicker areas of my beard. This is the razor I would recommend for most first time wet-shavers.
iii) This is the most aggressive of the fixed blade safety razors I have tried. It is sufficiently heavy that absolutely no additional pressure is needed, and the razor provides a rather close shave after one with- and one against-the-grain pass. I use this razor when I have shaved within the last 36 hours or whenever I travel. It is evident from the construction that it is extremely durable, as compared to the Futur, or any other adjustable razor for that matter.
iv) This adjustable razor has the blade angle of ii) at setting 1 and of iii) at setting 3; at setting 6 it is considerably more aggressive than anything else I have tried. I use this razor whenever my head or beard has been growing for more than 36 hours--first pass with-the-grain setting 6, second pass against-the-grain setting 3, which provides a rather close shave even if I have a week of beard/hair growth. A third pass against-the-grain at setting 6 provides an extremely close shave.
Furthermore, the large gap between the safety bars make it possible to cut through a week of growth with only a few strokes-per-pass, since unlike other razors, the cut hairs do not clog the spaces between the blade and safety bars. This is the only true safety razor (that is, a fixed blade razor with top and bottom safety bars) I have tried where this is the case, and for that reason, I highly recommend it for anyone who infrequently shaves their face or head.
However, the mechanism which holds the top safety bar in place, thereby securing the razor blade, seems considerably less durable than any other mechanism I have seen: the inward and downward pressure of two thin metal rods is all that holds the top bar in place, as opposed to one large (i & ii) or two medium (iii) screws. For this reason, and also because of its weight, this is by far the least drop resistant of the razors. I would not travel with it.
All that is to say: for those who have thick beards or who do not have sensitive skin, but who are not interested in an adjustable razor, the Parker Long Handle Super Heavy is likely the ideal razor. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a first fixed blade razor to such a person. However, it might be too heavy, hence too aggressive, as a first fixed blade razor for someone with sensitive skin or a thin beard. Because this razor is ideal for its target user, I rated it 5 stars.
For those of you considering the Merkur Progress, I would simply say: if your beard is medium thickness or if you have sensitive skin, the Futur is likely the better bet. The Progress is even more aggressive than the Futur, so even on the lowest setting, it is impossible to simulate the Short Handle 2 Piece.
For those of you considering the Parker Variant, you should be aware that you might have to exchange the one you receive for a new one--there seems to be an issue where the blade sits unevenly and insecurely when you get a lemon, making an otherwise great razor unusable. A good Parker Variant is likely comparable, if not superior, to the Futur. But both have their durability/manufacturing/shipping issues.
It gives me less razor burn and cuts than typical 3-5 blade disposable razors. With the single cutting edge, it is much more precise. Works great for hard to reach hair under your nose that larger, disposable razor heads can't reach. It is also very good for sensitive areas underneath the belt line because so little of the blade itself is exposed. The heavy weight is easier to handle in larger hands like mine.
I use it with Persona double edged blades. At 2 blades a week you're only spending about $15 a year.
I really like this razor, reading some of the reviews I had some initial doubts on just how this razor would shave and perform - I am impressed with this razor overall in both fit and finish and how well it does shave. I prefer a bit of a longer handle, and a bit of weight to the razor and this razor fulfills both of those requirements. I measured the razor at 104 grams / 3.6 oz., with an overall length of 4.25 inches, the handle from the bottom to where it touches the underside of the table (where blade rests) is 4 inches in length.
The comb at the safety bar is closed, but grooved - albeit the grooves are very small. The gap for the blade exposure is good and some have said the blade does not protrude out far enough and makes this a mild shaving razor - my direct experience is the opposite, I find this a bit more aggressive than my Edwin Jagger DE89L and was surprised by this. I do find this razor needs to be rinsed out a bit more frequently than my other razors but not so much that I can not get several strokes before having to do so.
The twist to open mechanism I found to operate smoothly, access to change blades is easier than a two or three piece razor (I have both), and so far the blade sits straight and even, the doors hold it tight in position. The handle grip is secure and firm, not slippery when wet and soapy, style is very nice.
Fit and finish - overall very good, not perfect but nothing so horrendous or very visible except under close inspection. Compared to my experience with a Merkur 39C I would say this Parker is just as good, if not just slightly better in the casting and plating. Compared to my Edwin Jagger DE89L it is a bit less blemish free as the EJ is absolutely perfect on every point and piece. Again, the casting and plating issues are mostly where you do not see them and nothing that would make me return the razor.
I have included a lot of photos, some may be of interest in comparison and real life use, or not. I had a three day growth of whiskers waiting for this razor to arrive - NOT recommended - I have a before and after picture, no nicks or cuts, blood free shave. One photo with the pencil is showing the approximate center of gravity on this razor. The picture with the razor lineup for size comparison are (left to right) Parker 99R, Merkur 39C, Edwin Jagger DE89L.
I did a proper pre-shave hydration, used a glycerin based shave soap and badger brush, three pass technique (with the grain, across the grain, against the grain). I would rate the shave BBS, but I did have more "burn" irritation than with my other razors - for the moment I will chalk that up to my learning curve with this particular razor as I did have to adjust the angle at which I am used to - this is not a mild shave razor in my opinion as even with a small amount of razor edge exposed, I had to almost use the razor with no angle at all, perpendicular to my face.
I would recommend this razor to anyone looking for a long handle and a bit of weight to it, as well as a very good and close shave.

Sometimes when I'm having a bad day, I just lather up and shave and the process feels so damn therapeutic. You'll never go back to the cartridge once your past the learning curve. The shave is simple, elegant and straightforward.
I'm someone who was prone to ingrown hair when using cartridge. But now, I can confidently shave against the grain to get that baby bottom shave and avoid ingrown hairs altogether.
I recommend this for really thick skin!
And indeed butterfly allows to put razor faster than a 2 piece razor, but it takes too long to clean and it does not easily remove the cut hair (compare to a 2 piece).
Neverthless, the design size and weight is nice.
