Equipped with an automatic LED light and ergonomic tool design, the FURminator(R) Nail Grinder simplifies pet nail care and promotes comfort and health associated with trimmed nails.

Instructions for Use:
1.Monitor your pet’s nails and care for when appropriate to avoid overgrowth.
2. Pet’s nails should not touch the floor when standing. Regular maintenance is important for the health and comfort of your pet.
3. Slowly introduce the grinder to your pet. When they are comfortable with the tool and the sound, you should begin working on the nails.
4. Before starting, note where the dead nail ends and where the live part, 'the quick', starts. Hold the paw firmly while gently pressing the base of each nail with your thumb.
5. Gently grind down the nail going slowly to keep your pet comfortable. Be sure to stop grinding before reaching the quick to avoid bleeding. Short passes of the grinder are recommended to avoid over-heating of the nail, which can cause discomfort.

This compact, 2-speed grinder features an easy-grip handle for safe, secure trimming, and an LED light that illuminates the nail. An anti-microbial plastic finish helps keep germs and bacteria to a minimum. This tool includes two replaceable grinding bands (additional replacement bands sold separately) and 4 AA-alkaline batteries. Replace the grinding band when it appears worn or when it becomes more difficult to file your pet’s nails. Pets need their nails trimmed on a regular basis, usually monthly. Untrimmed nails can affect the comfort and overall health of your pet. Untrimmed nails can cause pets to develop sore feet, legs and hips, well as general discomfort. Use FURminator pet products for professional-quality, at-home grooming results: Brush daily to detangle and smooth fur; deShed weekly to reduce shed hair; and bathe monthly to promote healthy skin and coat while reducing shedding.

It is rather loud, which scares a lot of dogs, but here is my experience with this:
I got this for my rather spooky greyhound. The first time I turned it on several feet away from him, he PANICKED. Ran into the crate, tried to hide. Getting anywhere near him led to crying. I thought I had just wasted my money and was rather dismayed at first. If you're in this situation, here's what to do:
(I clicker train, but you don't need to for this)
1. At all meal times, I turned the grinder on and set it down just far away enough from his bowl, that he was aware of it, but would still come eat. By the 4th meal (dinner on day 2), it was standing directly next to his bowl and he was eating just fine.
2. A few times a day, for about 3 or so minutes, I would get treats, and take the grinder and turn it on for just long enough that he doesn't panic, then click-treat. As I was doing this, I would increase the length that the grinder was turned on and decrease the distance away from him, making sure to treat just before he panics.
3. Mine wasn't a fan of getting his paws handled in general, so a few times a day, I would get him sitting, and touch his paw, click, treat. He went from pulling back immediately and crying, to, by the end of the second session of this, laying there calmly and letting me hold and handle his front paws. Back paws took another 2 sessions or so.
4. When he is comfortable with having his paws handled and the noise, I would repeat the routine, just touching the bottom of the running grinder to his paw, and treating, so he gets used to the vibration. From here, just work up to actually touching the grinder to his nail, and increasing the length that he lets you do this.
And finally, my life changing secret, peanut butter in a kong. Seriously. He went from me being able to just barely touch the nail to the grinder, to laying calmly while I grind his nails with just this addition.
All in all, I got this product on Saturday. By the following Wednesday, with maybe 20 minutes of work on this a day, he was letting me grind his nails. I never would have thought it was possible if you told me on Saturday, after seeing him crying and panicking.
It's rather inexpensive for what it does so I certainly didn't mind. It's not like a I purchased a $200 hair trimmer or something along those lines.
I worry about my dog's nail getting hot from the grinder so I've adopted a "tap, tap, tap" method where I only hold the grinder to the nail for a "1-2" count for each "tap". She doesn't seem to mind as much when I do this.
Because this product is harder to find in stores near me, I needed one asap and purchased a different brand for slightly less cost. Took it home and tried it and it just did NOT have the speed. I'd have been there ALL day with my dog trying to get the effects of 3 minutes that the Furminator brand gives us.
I myself have a dog who now won't stand for groomer clippings; even with me and one other girl holding her down, she thrashes around violently. It got to the point where an additional girl who would do the trimming said they wouldn't be able to do hers because she wouldn't sit still for more than 2 seconds.
She also isn't a fan of this method but she'll at least sit with me for a few minutes WITH the condition that I constantly tell her the whole time how good she is and promise a cookie for when we're done. Fair enough for me! :) I try to do this every day and that's been helping; they sit longer the more they're used to it.
Without this product, I don't even know HOW we would be dealing with her nails... there's really nowhere else for us to go option-wise. THANK YOU FURMINATOR!

I considered getting a Dremel but I’m not impressed with the looks of the upgraded nail guide system and neither are many reviewers.
So I got the Furminator and it works great.
The guard is similar to what I was used to and it makes quick work of my 2 standard (large) poodles nails because the motor is quite strong. I only need to use it on the low speed. That’s good because the high speed is very noisy.
I saw a few reviews that said it was weak but I use rechargeable batteries and it has lots of power and I can do both dogs in about 20 min with power to spare.
There is a design flaw IMHO. The tab that locks the battery holder in place is at a seam where the two halves of the main unit come together. This puts pressure at bad spot and causes the seam to spread at that point which looks like it could break if not careful. I removed the battery holder, put a drop of Crazy glue on the seam at that point and after 30 min inserted the battery pack and it doesn’t spread the seam anymore.
You get a extra grinding tube but no instructions on how to install it. Loosen the screw on the end of the drum, remove the old grinding tube, install the new one and tighten the screw to expand it to hold the tube firmly in place so it doesn’t slip on the drum. Originally the screw on mine was loose so the grinding drum was slipping and moving back and forth on the drum like other reviewers have reported.
Don’t bother using the included batteries, they are zinc carbon and can’t supply enough current. Alkaline or NMHI rechargeables are a must.
The light helps you to see what you’re doing. If your dog has transparent nails like one of mine you can check the location of the quick easily by shining the light from the opposite side the nail before grinding from the proper side.
To keep the nails from heating up too much do a bit on each nail and repeat. Your dog will be much more comfortable. Trimming the nails every week or two makes it easy and quick work.
