5.0 out of 5 starsAll men need this. Be sure to bring it on your travels. Facial hair is a responsibility.
Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2016
This is such a must for men. I mean, having this for almost a year, wondering how my facial hair looked like before this. All the heads has lots of uses. Although in some length the heads may be redundant with each other, for those that are really particular with their hair has great uses for all. Of course, this can not compete with the professional ones but c'mon. Not every one is a barber-blooded guy, and having portable grooming devices like these, really helps out the modern man.

I have to agree to some people here that some of the heads are really fragile things made of plastic. Because it is true. It is somewhat a plastic that may break. But in almost a year of just tossing them in my drawer back and forth with every use, I find that you really have to make an effort before you break it. Much like almost any thing you buy out there. Even let's say phone cases that is there to protect your phones, it will break, crease, dent, chip off in harsh or unavoidable situations. But for an electric shaver, I think it isn't in the category that you do not take care off.

With this being waterproof, well, before buying this, I asked a lot of persons here stating that this is definitely not waterproof. Some are sure, some have never tried it. And with me looking for an electric shaver that I can safely wash each and every use (as I'm very OC at things touching my face), I took a chance. And with that, I can not definitely say if it is really waterproof. As I wouldn't want to be responsible for others that may be damaged upon full water contact. But what I can say in my case is that, EVERY SINGLE TIME I use the device, before and after, I wash it from the to bottom, sometimes even submerging it in water for a full minute. Every single time. Before I use it, I wash the WHOLE thing under the faucet with soap and water. Then the same thing after use. Whole thing. And for almost a year, I can still use this twice a week until today without signs of damage. So yeah, that's just me. Just make sure that this is not plugged while doing it. But of course, I do not recommend it, I'm just stating my habitual practice.

So great features, amazing product, reasonable price. Get groomed out there.

My old vacuum-type Norelco (which lasted for years) died, and I picked this up because I'm considering keeping my nose hairs at a more conservative length. while the nose hair trimmer works great, I can't really recommend the beard trimmer part of this as a way to regularly keep your beard at a longer length. My old Norelco trimmer ran about 25% faster than this, in turbo, and it makes a difference... even though the old Norelco had a cheaper-looking blade assembly with plastic, it cut my beard far more rapidly and evenly. A "real" trimmer (like a barber uses) runs even faster, and that's what I've now gone back to for actual length trims. If you're using a guide for length, this trimmer simply takes too many passes to completely & evenly trim a beard. If your beard is damp, forget about it. I don't think of my beard as very thick, and it took me five minutes to do an all over trim that would take one minute with another clipper. It might have taken me fifteen but I gave up and got some regular clippers out to finish what I started.

Hate the way the heads twist on to attach, this could have been designed to be more intuitive and ergonomic. Not a fan of the way the guards attach either. The three guards all vastly overlap in lengths as well. There are apparently some people who use this for their head-hair, which I find inconceivable. A standard $15 corded Wahl from the drugstore will do you much better than this. It's just not fast enough.

The head on the detail clippers is so clunky, it's not really as useful for getting to a tricky spot as it could be. Yet another thing my old beard trimmer did better than this one.

Three stars because it IS pretty useful for touch ups, details and close work, even though the design can make it hard to see what you're doing. The fast charging is nice. The micro foil works better than I expected it to. It certainly doesn't replace my beard trimmer, but it's not bad to have around.

First trimmer I buy though an online store, and was of the best choice on the market considering the price. Material feels good, looks durable (I've been using it for more than a year and still works as the first day of use), and stable when using it, the battery lasts enough for cutting my head hair and shave my beard without charging it too long. The package contains different tools:

- The trimmer: it really fits my expectations, probably is difficult to clean it up, but this does not make it as a bad product. Works very good and feels like an expensive trimmer, and as a expensive one it irritate your face, but it is good for the price.

- Hair-clipping tool: there is one tool for this, in effect works very well when using even when the material of this one and the beard tools are not strong made. There are different levels on the main trimmer to make different haircuts.

- Beard shaving tool: it contains to different tools for these, the most I use for shaving my beard is the smallest one and there are two others for those who want to have a longer beard.

- Nose trimmer: probably not recommended to use this one, it actually does not work well and feels like is going to cut your nose, then preferably use a little scissors for this.

Lasts, there is more what to say about it, but if you are considering to get a trimmer, first try this one which one of the best choices on the market.

WW
5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a set of trimmers that trim
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2015

I'll start by saying my only thing I use these trimmers for is trimming my beard. I did have some fun with them and our 11 year old son for reviewing purposes. Not to worry, he likes his hair buzzed short and hadn't had a haircut in nearly 2 months.

I have these two pairs of trimmers:
Panasonic ER224S All-in-One Hair Clipper & Beard Wet/Dry Trimmer
Wahl 9854-600 Lithium Ion All In One Trimmer

The Panasonic above are very good, but they don't have enough power for what I need.
The Wahl's from above rusted on me. In Wahl's defense they offered a free replacement set (Review with comment from Wahl in my history).

I had a specific problem. I don't like using guides when trimming my beard. I like to freehand trim my beard and to properly freehand you have to have pretty good power from your trimmer. Without good power all that happens is the hair pushes down before it's cut.

My beard is roughly 4-5 inches in length when brushed out, but I like for it to look neat and even. Using the two above linked trimmers, I would get varying results. Most of the time with either I would go to bed with an even beard then wake up with a 99% even beard, with 1% of the beard sticking out, stray hairs and that defined the type of trimmer I needed. It needed to have the power to get those single stray hairs instead of pushing them down.

My only knowledge of Philips products was with their televisions and older stereo systems. Everything I had bought from them had good quality, but it just didn't seem right to buy trimmers from what I knew as an electronics company. These Philips trimmers happened to have a coupon on them here on Amazon so I took a shot and have to say I'm impressed. The power is good enough to cut those stray hairs despite being quieter than the Wahl, similar sound as the Panasonic. Pushing the turbo button on these Philips trimmers boosts power even more, but I've only had to do it to test it out.

Since I'm bald, I really didn't have any other way to test these out, so I talked our 11 year old son into letting me try them on his hair with the guides. Keeping in mind, I do not like using guides and have never had any success with guided shaves. That didn't change. I just think I don't know how to use guides. These guides are solid, stay in place, but our son's hair still had uneven spots.

There are 3 guides included. One has a 2-12 range. One has a 2-16 range. One has a 2-20 range. I'm guessing that's millimeters and the different guides are for varying thickness of hair based on their designs. If you're good with guides then you'll like these. The Panasonic listed above comes with the one-piece guide that adjusts by dialing it which is pretty handy, but it pops off when you go to the longer lengths. That doesn't happen with these Philips guides.

It also comes with 4 different blade types for detailing/preference/nose etc...

I'll mention here in case anyone has the problem I had. The blade can be washed off as can the top part of the inner trimmer. There are hex type screws in the default blade, which I spent 20 minutes trying to remove. If there's any fault with these it's the lack of instructions. All mine had with it was a leaflet that showed the features. I tried pulling the blade which would be similar to the Panasonic trimmers, but that didn't work either. I finally entered a youtube search and found a video review that showed how to remove the blade/head. It's this easy ... you give it a 1/4 twist and it pops right off. Figures, I was thinking it was going to be something complicated. The blade/head goes back on the same way in opposite order.

This set of trimmers are travel-friendly as well. All of the guides, the charger, the trimmer itself fits nicely in the provided pouch. The battery life is about the same as the other trimmers I've tried. If they are fully charged I can go a full week without charging them. I use them 2-3 times a week. I'm very happy with them.

I bought this over 3 years ago for $30 and still work just fine. All the accessories are handy. Very satisfied. This is a real bang for the buck and will last long enough with good maintenance.
Pros:
-> Excellent battery life and easy to charge the in-built battery.
-> Easy to clean and maintain (oil the blades regularly).
-> All accessories are easy to use and washable. (make sure you dry them off after washing)
-> Ergonomic and easy to use for facial and body hair (but may hurt if you are not careful/gentle)

Cons:
-> Not water resistant/proof
-> The main head needs to be handled carefully. If that breaks, a few other trimming accessories can't be used.(height adjusting ones)
-> OUT OF STOCK :'{ and very pricy now.

But you may need to lookup for latest models now.

Does everything very well.

I like that it's a lithium battery which I can charge whenever (not just when it's dead), so it's ready for possible long stints away from power.
Also it runs while charging.

The small trimmer shaves pretty close, it's good enough for a rough look beard shave.
The nose hair trimmer is useful and should travel through security better than scissors.
Hair trimmer attachment works well.
Battery lasts long time, actually I haven't had to charge it yet.

It's all better than my old Norelco G370, and even that one I was quite happy with.

Like all of these things I wish there were a way to keep the attachments neatly, compactly and safely. Maybe a tube where each nested together? Or maybe a holder for each item which attaches like legos to the next holder so you can build your custom tube for the attachments you actually use? I don't know what'd work, just saying it's be nice for travel. But the attachments do seam robust enough for a drawer. My only worry is in my travel backpack.

5.0 out of 5 stars A high tech replacement for my trusty 20 year old Wahl, it works. It's gonna hurt at first but it gets better!
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2016

The wife said I need to come into this century and start using some of the newer technology, so I am replacing my 25 year old set of corded clippers with these. My first impression, out of the bag... it has a lot of accessories! I'm still not sure about the spacers and how well they will keep my beard trimmed because only one has a front guard to keep the spacing right and I can't screw up my beard.
So onto the first use... I let it charge for a night and tried it out the next morning before a shower. I'll add right here that I have a very thick and curly beard when I let it grow out. Have had it for 20 plus years now. (so only my mother remembers me with out it) I first played with a couple of the guards to see what would get me the right cut spacing. I chose the one with the front cover because I don't want to gouge my beard and have to clean shave it. The clippers didn't seem to cut anything! I read the instructions thinking maybe I had to sharpen them like my old one and they said "self sharpening". So I oiled them again and took another guard.... still not working very well but at least it's trying now. So maybe this is designed for some pansy boys thin little hair do. Since I already put out the money, I'm trying this contraption until it works! The more I used it the better it cut so maybe there is something to this self sharpening gig. Once I got my beard nice and trimmed up (it took almost 45 minutes at this point) I removed the guard and started on my neck. It sheared it down with little to no effort! COOL, now onto this little shaver attachment... it took me a little while to figure out how to change it, but I managed it. OK first impression of the shaver... OUCH!!! It was yanking the little hairs out of my neck! After a few swipes, since I'm a stubborn old fart it started cutting as the sounds it makes started changing to more like a Makita angle grinder!
Now as an aging gent, I now have hairs growing out of places where they shouldn't and the designers of this little gadget seem to have thought about that as well so they sent this little auger attachment which closely resembles the drilling bit from an oil rig. After getting the hairs ripped out of my neck for a minute before that other dohicky started cutting, there is no way on gods green earth that I'm sticking an auger into my nose or ears. I'll continue to do that like a real man and just grab and yank said hairs out by the roots. The boring bit will remain untested and can rust to oblivion for all I care.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid 4 stars but if you are alone and cut you own hair don't throw away your Wahl just yet.
Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2017

I love the cordless feature but don't throw away your corded Wahl just yet.

I've spent years cutting my own hair to a length of 1/2 inch with the standard home Wahl barber razor and Wahl mustache trimmers but having used the trimmer for so long, its guide just finally wore completely through to where the blade would actually touch skin and get too close.

My Dad has been a Norelco user for as long as I can remember (floating heads razor) so I was comfortable with the quality of the Norelco Brand and thought it would be a nice way to replace two items at once - the Wahl barber razor and the trimmer - and truthfully it would be able to do that just fine except for one thing. The Norelco doesn't have the tapered angle "over the ear" guides (one for left ear and one for right ear). If I weren't cutting my own hair I could get around that by using a comb to taper the edges but that takes two hands, one of which in my case needs to be holding a mirror. That said, other than over the ears and around the neck line it did an outstanding job of cutting my hair.

The biggest positive for me is the cordless feature. Cutting my own hair can be a challenge especially when doing the back of my head. I have a double crown of opposing swirls back there which means I have to attack the hair against the grain from every conceivable angle to get it all cut the same length. With a corded razor the cord frequently gets in the way as I try to hold a hand held mirror with one hand while maneuvering the razor with the other around in concentric circles as the cord twists and snags on sink faucet and handles. None of that this time!! It was very liberating to be cordless and "shaved" lots of time off my haircut.

Another positive compared to the Wahl was the adjustable height design for the guide teeth. You can adjust the guide at 1mm notched intervals by pressing the guide button and sliding the guide either closer to or further away from the blade. The only way to change sizes with the Wahl was to remove one size guide and replace it with another. This also limited how much adjusting you could do with the Wahl because there were not 13 different guides for each of 1-13mm settings like you get with the Norelco. This is a very nice feature of the Norelco enabling a very specific cutting distance. With the Wahl's choice of only 5 different teeth heights you could only get "close enough for government work".

However, there is a small negative regarding the design of those adjustable guides. The guides lift the blade away from the skin a set distance with plastic teeth that form channels that guide the hair to the blade. On anything but the lowest notched setting there's a gap between the bottom of the plastic guide teeth and the top of the metal blade that allows for the cut hair to pass between them. Instead of being swept up by the blade during the cut (like a snow shovel would scoop up snow) the cut hair passes by the blade and teeth and gets left behind on your head making for a little messier clean up. If the guide was designed to rest flat against the blade the cut hair would be forced to come along with the motion of my hand to be flicked off into the trash can positioned below me. So, periodically while cutting my hair I'd have to stop and brush off my head to remove any cut hair that was left laying there so I could see what hairs remained attached that needed another pass of the blade.

To summarize, any noted small negatives of the Norelco are made up for by the ability to easily cut the hair on the back of my own head cordlessly. Highly recommended.
