3.0 out of 5 starsSmooth Shaving but Weak Lather
Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2023
This soap is ok to lather and leaves my skin smooth and moisturized. Nice enough lather but I cannot get a rich creamy lather out of it no matter the method. Its on the airy side and dries out and disappears on the face too fast for my taste. The scent is mild (generally I don't care for cheap cologne scents in skin products but this one is mild enough to tolerate). The other down side is that it leaves a heavy soap scum in the sink bowel even when rinsing instead of filling the sink. It leaves a very sticky ring and takes some extra work to clean out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than The Fat for me
Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2016
Scent: HimalayaSize: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
I'm writing this review as a comparison with my last favorite shaving soap, Mitchell's Wool Fat (MWF). I really appreciate MWF's slick lather, which is why I've been using it for the past year or so despite not really liking the idea of using a soap that is made from animal products. When I ran out of MWF last time, I did a search for "vegan shaving soap" on Amazon, which turned up Men's Soap Shaving Soap (MSSS). I figured it was worth a try and boy! Am I glad I tried it. I've got a good 6 or 8 shaves with MSSS at this point, so I figured it was time to write up my thoughts.

The first point I'll make is that MSSS is glycerin based, so I was able to melt it directly into my mug (it took two 15-second bursts on my microwave to do that) rather than just plop the puck at the bottom and hope for the best. Now I never have to worry again about my shaving soap falling out of the mug when I'm rinsing it during cleanup. That's a subtle point, but something that certainly adds to the experience for me.

Lathering MSSS is a snap. One beef I had with MWF was that it was not the easiest to draw up a lather (I live in small-town CO, so our water is pretty soft, plus I use a synthetic brush that is supposed to be as soft as nice badger, although I can't say for sure). MWF usually required about 60 seconds of work to build up the foundation, then a 20-second period of face lathering for each pass. Frankly, a total of 2 minutes to lather is not a lot a time, so it might not make sense to ding MWF for taking on the order of seconds more to lather than MSSS. However, MSSS lathers up really quickly and easily - maybe a 15-second initial lather with maybe another 10 on the face for each pass. The lather is thick and rich and applies like a dream. In my experience now, I would say that the lather is thicker and richer than MWF with less work.

Thick lather is great, but if it's not slick on the skin, it's not worth much. MSSS definitely delivers on that count! For my skin, I feel that MSSS is slicker than MWF. That comes close to heresy to some people, but that's been my experience. I get far less irritation with MSSS than MWF, which is saying something, since MWF works pretty well for me. After a shave with MSSS, however, my skin is cool, with no trace of irritation. It also feels really soft and smooth for the rest of the day. I'm really pleased with how this soap performs for me.

From what I understand, a glycerin-based soap is typically softer than a triple-milled tallow-based soap like MWF, so it might be that MSSS will last slightly shorter time than MWF. I'm going to call that a wash, though, because I take a lot less time and effort to lather, so that might make a difference in soap used per shave. In the couple of weeks that I've used MSSS, I haven't seen it get any smaller, so I would guess that it will be fairly long lasting. MSSS seems to be harder than other glycerin-based soaps that I have used, anyway.

Obviously, as with all shaving products, your experience will differ. Your water and skin (and brush, razor, blade, technique, etc.) are different from mine. But given that MSSS is pretty inexpensive (less than MWF), it's worth a shot in your mug. I've really appreciated the shave that I have gotten and - truth be told - I'm not heading back to MWF anytime soon. I like a good vegan product that works well, especially when it's better than a product with animal fat in it. I recommend this soap.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Right Soap
Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2017

In the event you're too impatient or too good to read reviews, the short version is this: buy it! Don't question it, don't analyze it, don't think about it any longer, hit your "Buy it now with 1 click" button and move on.

Ok, I'm pretty particular. I can also be skeptical. And am not the user who leaves extremely detailed reviews. This soap changes that, and has earned your time reading this, no matter how silly I may sound.

I have extremely sensitive skin, and am prone to breakouts, even in my late 40's. Because of these issues, I only shave a couple times a week, on rare occasions, 3. I leave my moustache and goatee or beard in place, trimming when necessary and shaving around it when the shadow is too dark...

I took a chance on this soap because my gut told me I should. It was a great choice! This soap is just right for me.

It's not too smelly (sinus and allergy issues), but leaves a light fragrance for just the right amount of time. Not too woodsy, not really too anything, just simple and refreshing.

The lather, well, it's good. I saw the reviews that claim it doesn't work, my question would be if those users knew how to use the soap properly. It's not rocket science, but it can be an art form. I personally appreciate the arts. Even if you're not an artist, this soap lathers well. My brush isn't too fancy, (yes they can be expensive and very precise ... mine is neither), and it gets the job done quite well and without extensive effort, as some may claim. I simply disagree with them, it works well, don't over think it.

The company, wow! They sent me a soap. Then they followed up with a very specific email, telling me they were going to follow up and how often, never requiring my response, only requesting a moment of my time to read, which I did. I could have shut them down, which I generally do, but they sounded sincere.

In the series of emails they sent, they were:
- Genuinely concerned that I understood that they didn't want to intrude, but wanted to assist me if I needed;
- Provided specific instructions on usage in the event that I was unfamiliar;
- Gave me the option to opt out of their emails;
- Ensured me that they backed their product with a 100% money back guarantee;
- Wanted to make sure I was completely satisfied;
- I could continue to rave like an infomercial, and I'm sure you've heard it all before, but I assure you, these guys are different! They're better! Trust me!

After using the soap several times to make sure I didn't have any issues (which I haven't, and normally would by now), I'm going to purchase my stock in this soap, as well as use it for gifts for family and friends that I know will enjoy it.

Folks, this is a small business, doing it the right way!! They've earned my very particular support! Give them a shot, you won't be let down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Lather and a Close Shave

I am a wet shave fanatic and when I had the opportunity to try out Mens Soap Company Himalayan scented shaving soap, I was all over it. This handy little puck of shave soap drops right into just about any cup you want to use…or you could just splurge a little and get a real shaving soap mug.

When I received this puck of shave soap last month I immediately decided to give it a sniff to find out what Himalayan scent was. I can say that it had a delightful and smooth scent that was not overbearing.

After adding a little moisture to this soap to soften it up, I used my trusty ole badger hair shaving brush I have had for years. The soap lathers nicely and really thick. I rubbed it onto my face with the brush and found It easy to apply, and noticed that it does not run off the face.

I decided to give it the test by using my straight razor. I found the soap stayed damp and did not dry out during the shave, which is especially important when using a straight razor for a wet shave. All of my razor strokes went smoothly. After finishing the shave the soap left a slight moisturized feeling to my face.

I have been using this soap for the last month and it has worked out well for me except in one area. It is something that I cannot explain other than since I started using this shave soap, the oils in my badger brush have been stripped, leaving the brush somewhat dry. That is disappointing to some degree, but I think I have found the fix by applying a few drops of Argan oil to the brush once a week.

My suggestion to you…is use a cheap brush if you don’t want to risk stripping the natural oils from your expensive badger brush. Otherwise this is a fine shave soap and it is reasonably priced. I have been using it for over a month, and there is still plenty of shave soap to go.

I'm a little floored by the bad reviews people have given this product. Several are some combination of irrelevant/unfair. Many that simply amount "I didn't like it." are all responded to by Men's Soap Company apologizing and offering full refunds.

Before buying this soap I had never wet shaved in my life. So this was both my first wet shaving experience and my first shave soap. My main criterion was 100% natural and biodegradable ingredients. There were a couple to choose from and I selected this one based on the reviews, price and the company's willingness to engage with naysayers.

For anyone who complains about the lather being too thin: you're doing something wrong or are unaware that soap lather does not need to look like whipped cream to provide protection.

For those that say it doesn't protect them well enough, that's harder. Perhaps their face/razor combination are just not compatible with this soap, even when it is used as directed. In those cases the buyer is justified in a lower rating, but at least they can get a full refund. The customer service is fantastic!

Having never wet shaved before and knowing my general physiology I would characterize myself as having sensitive skin. I had (and continue to have) zero issues with this soap. I was, in fact, shocked at how well it worked for me. I have written an extensive review and tutorial for my shaving experience and published on my website. Apparently I can't embed a link so just do a web search for "Shave the Whales" at it will be at the site called favoritedayliving.

I am using very basic tools: a Lord L6 DE safety razor and the Tweezerman badger brush. For those having challenges remember to presoak your soap in warm water (I start mine soaking as I hop in the shower). Watch Michael Freedberg's video on YouTube called "Lathering Tutorial - How to Lather a Shaving Soap". Men's Soap Company is very proactive about providing tips and I think the vast majority of negative reviews ignore those tips.

It may be premature to give this five stars as it's the only shave soap I've ever used. But the fact that a wet shaving "virgin" could use it and, not only not have problems, but to have things go nigh perfectly impresses me to no end. Don't hesitate to give it a try, you've got nothing to loose!

UPDATE - Two months in and no issues! I have really grown to like this soap even more! I don't shave every day so I think this soap could last many, many months. Perhaps even close to a year! I'm hoping to test more of their products as they become available. I have conversed with the company extensively over the past two months. They are very friendly and communicative - well done, MSC!

5.0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite!
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2015
Scent: HimalayaSize: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
I started wet shaving with a safety razor a few years ago as part of my quest to get a good shave without irritation. During that time, I've tried a quite a few soaps and creams, including the Proraso sensitive shave soap, Edwin Jagger's sensitive soaps and creams, several Taylor of Old Bond Street creams, and the Henry Cavendish Soap that appears from the description to be basically the same as this soap. This one is my hands down favorite out of them all.

When I bought this soap, I got an email from the company that gave instructions for use. That would be a nice touch for a novice wet shaver, but I've dealt with enough soaps to know how to build a lather with them. That having been said, this soap is so easy to lather that it would be hard to mess up. Where most products require just the right amount of water and several minutes of work to get a great mug of lather good for my three pass shave, I can simply soak this soap in my mug as I fill the sink, and when I go to make build lather it takes me about thirty seconds to get a great mug full of awesome, rich lather with a perfect texture, not too runny and not too dry. It actually lathers even more easily than the creams I've tried.

The shave that the lather provides is also top notch. It forms a thick enough layer to be very protective, while being slick enough to enable a good, close shave. It's the best balanced lather I've come across yet. It's so good that I can even go against the grain in some places without bleeding! That's a feat no other soap/cream and blade combination has ever achieved.

I also like the smell. As one might imagine, it's similar to the Henry Cavendish soap, but more understated. As a man who typically dislikes sent in any of the products I use, I actually enjoy this. It's masculine, but understated and not overpowering, as some products like Proraso can be in my opinion.

Finally, this soap is great on my skin. It does't cause dryness or tightness at all. In fact, it has a moisturizing effect, and conditions the skin very nicely. I love the way my face feels after I've shaved with this stuff.

I'm not sure how this soap is so much better than everything else I've tried, including the Henry Cavendish soap, which from the ingredients list seems to be essentially the same, but I do know I love it! This will be my go to product for the foreseeable future.

5.0 out of 5 stars All in all a great product

I've always tried to save money on shaving cream because just using soap as been enough (especially since I've needed to shave once a day since I was 13). But now my skin has become rather sensitive after shaving from just using soap so I was looking for a better alternative than shaving cream. It's not really a money issue anymore but I like to leave less of a carbon footprint from leaving empty bottles, cans, spray etc.
I'm really glad I found this. It comes in a small cardboard box and from the looks of using it everyday for a few weeks; it will last longer than a an of shaving cream. To be honest when I first got it I embarrassingly had no idea how to get it foaming properly. I bought it with the bowl so I thought I needed to cut a little off and drop it in there and soak it a bit and stir it with the brush. This obviously sadly failed. I watched a youtube video how to do it and was embarrassed how simple it was. Just stick it in a bowl and soak the brush and then just stir the puck in the bowl and it foams up really well. It feels much smoother while and after shaving and I love it. Bought it for my dad as well.

FYI; I bought the AKStore bowl with this and it literally barely fits in the bowl. You can stuff it in with force and make it work with a little more of a mess outside the bowl, but I just bought a bigger bowl that keeps the mess inside.

UPDATE 12/03/17: I bought this puck on Sept 7th and starting using it on the 10th. It's Dec and the volume is down to about half (I shave once a day). Safe to say I'm getting a great bang for my buck on this product. Never using shaving cream again and no more "can" usage yay!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Shave Soap
Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2015

Excellent Shave Soap! I've used it for about a week every day so far and it is the best hard soap I've used. I have used Proraso, Art of Shaving and Van Der Hagen. Of all those soaps I like this one the best and when factoring the price, it's my very favorite. They claim that you do not need any pre-shave treatment (oils, etc.) or aftershave (blame, lotions, etc.) and they are correct. In the dead of winter when skin gets really dry, I only use this soap with no aftershave and my face still feels soft, smooth and moisturized. I figure using this soap and a DE blade saves me a lot of money and I get a better quality shave that doesn't tear my face up. The first day I used it, it did take some effort to get a good lather going. On day two, it took about 15 seconds to whip a nice, thick creamy lather that provides fantastic glide and protection. I have been DE shaving for about 4 years and even with my experience some minor nicks and cuts happen from time to time. I haven't experienced any irritation or nicks and cuts at all with this soap. The protection is superior. Art of Shaving soap is nice too but it costs $35 a puck and is so thick it doesn't rinse off the blade very well. I also had stubble sticking to the my sink after using that soap and my razor was caked with dried soap. This stuff provides the same superior shave and doesn't guck up your blade or your razor or you sink. For $13 a puck I couldn't be happier. I use Feather blades in a Merkur 38C razor. The use an Omega Boar Hair Brush and a Marvy shave mug. It all works together very well for a superior and economical shave!

5.0 out of 5 stars The scent is very mild!

Scent is important when you're married to someone highly sensitive to aromas, to the point of an allergic reaction. I like a light sandalwood, which this kinda sorta is, but I may try adding some ground cloves or cinnamon to the next batch (I may wind up reminiscent of a French bakery).

I wrote a review of something else I tried a few years ago (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FF77IQC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) that claimed a sandalwood scent but smelled more like a disaster at the petroleum refinery.

One very good thing about this soap is how it responds to a microwave oven. When one puck is worn down—one puck lasts me for more than six months—I just add another puck to the remains and put my shaving-soap bowl in the microwave oven for 20 seconds, stir the melted glop together, and let it set. Or when it gets down so far that the soap is no longer adhering to the bowl and is worn through at the bottom, 20 seconds of nuking will settle it down to a smooth pool again.

(I was rather bemused by comments on mashing the soap into the bowl: That's why Litton Industries was founded, guys! Microwave the soap and let it floooow!)

And if you're looking for sharp blades, I recommend the Feather: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RWTQTS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(I am sure there is a way to condense the hyperlink, but who has time for that? Also, I have no idea how the image got turned sideways. I imagine we'll survive.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a great, long-lasting, high-lather soap.
Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017

Before anything, I wanted to point out the extra steps Men's Soap Company takes to ensure it's customers receive the best shaving experience possible when utilizing their product. Unlike most things you buy online, they sent me a couple of pre-delivery messages to include how to get the best shave and another on how to prep and use their soap. This included how to get a really good lather and a tip on how to make the soap fit best into whatever shave cup you are using.

As for the soap itself, I really like it. For starters, it's about 3 times larger than some of the other soaps I've ordered from Amazon, which I normally blow through in a matter of a few short weeks. I've had this for a couple of months now and thanks the good seal in my shave cup and to it's overall thickness, there's no end in site still.

One of the reason's I purchased this particular product was from the representative lather shown in the picture here on Amazon. However, in truth, the real thing looks nothing like that (it appears it was staged with a foam shaving cream). Anyway, if you follow the instructions they send via e-mail, it does provide a really nice, thick lather; better than any brush soap I've ever used, including the expensive stuff you would find at The Art of Shaving.

Lastly, there is virtually no scent, which sometimes clash with aftershaves or deodorants. So, if you want a quality soap, with a good lather, that last a long time and doesn't cost too much, then I highly recommend Men's Soap Co. Shaving Soap
