For the longest time I had been looking for a beard brand that did not have harmful chemicals in it, was made in America, and smelled great. Back in July I finally found that brand, that being "Mountaineer Brand". I purchased the timber sent because who doesn't love to smell like a tree? The scent smells very good and it actually lasts for quite a long time. In some cases up to 6 hours. The texture of the beard wash is very nice and fine, and it leaves my beard feeling moisturized every time I use it. I love that this brand is made in West Virginia and I love that this brand does not use harmful chemicals because products with harmful chemicals should not be put anywhere near your beard or your face! I just purchased my second bottle and will continue purchasing this when they run out. Now only if you guys created a shampoo for your head that smells like timber. 🤔😁

3.0 out of 5 starsFive Stars If Not for Product Inconsistency and Bad Packaging
Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2022
I would give this product five stars for the beard wash itself. I've tried both the pine and pine tar scents, and they're both great. Pine is probably more for everyone and has a really nice pine scent — pretty much what you'd expect a pine-scented beard wash to smell like (which is a good thing because I hate surprises with scents). Pine tar is also awesome once you try it a few times and get used to it; it grew on me after several uses. But it definitely smells like freshly laid tar with pine trees mixed in, if that's your thing. Both scents lather very nicely and leave my beard feeling clean with a nice yet subtle lingering scent that isn't overpowering.

My issues with this brand, however, lie with product consistency and packaging. What I mean by the former is that the first couple bottles were fine, but the third one I purchased had absolutely no scent at all to it. It was just scentless goop and smelled sort of like Cetaphil face wash with no pine scent at all. I panicked because I thought I had the Rona, but my fiancée couldn't smell any pine either. I sent it back and got another bottle, which was good again and smelling like Christmas. I'm not sure if the factory forgot to mix in the scent or what, but hopefully there aren't too many bottles out there like that.

As far as the packaging goes, there are two problems I have experienced. The first problem echoes what others are saying about the poor lid design. It clogs constantly, forcing me to jam sharp objects in the lid hole to unclog it. Maybe this happens because the beard wash has some pine sap in it, and therefore hardens over time? Whatever the reason, it's annoying, and this happens every few DAYS, which is a real bummer. I started leaving a toothpick in the shower for a quick declog sesh when needed.

The second issue with packaging is with the bottle's label. After a couple weeks, the moisture from daily showering caused the label's ink to drip down the bottle. I grabbed the bottle off the shower shelf one night to find a blue ink ring on the shelf from where the ink ran down. Never had this happen with a shower product before, but it's definitely another unnecessary annoyance.

If the product were more consistent and the packaging better, then I'd definitely give this beard wash five stars. I'll keep buying it because of Amazon's good return policy, but otherwise I'd be wary. If you buy, just keep in mind that you may get a bum bottle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beard Care

I purchased this beard wash after going through multiple different brands. While I was always happy with the products, I never quite found exactly what I was looking for. Most products seem to clean, but not offer needed oils. Or they lathered, but didn't condition. However, with this product, it was a nice mix of everything. It has the proper oils in it so you could use it every day if you wished. It lathers up so it can help with scrubbing to help get dry skin out from under your beard. It conditions and makes your beard soft as can be after use. I ordered the timber scent on accident (I wanted citrus) and this sucker is like getting dropkicked by Paul Bunyan. However, the solid part is that the scent doesn't linger. By the time I've toweled off, the smell is already gone and leaving me with a soft beard. The only negative about the product is that the cap is a screw cap. So you have to unscrew it, pour some out (a little goes a long way) and then manage to screw it back on with a handful of beard wash. Would be much nicer if it was a pop open style cap. Overall though, I'm looking forward to going back and trying the citrus scent because I've been happy with the product.

This washes away beard oils, balms and mustache wax without over stripping the hair or face. I have and trust many mountaineering brand products.

4.0 out of 5 stars Extra foamy! But there's a catch...
Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2019

I wish I could give this product 4.5 stars because I only have one minor complaint, and that's the after-scent. Initially it smells delightful - not over-powering, very manly, and natural. The cedar scent is pleasantly subtle. After you apply it, lather, and rinse, however, the refreshing scent completely disappears and is replaced by one that is incredibly medicinal, strong, lingering, and more than moderately unpleasant. It reminds me of the smell of some public restroom hand soap. The kind where you instantly regret washing your hands. While the product says there are no artificial fragrances, I would still rate it almost as harsh as any chemical fragrance, which may be a deal breaker for some.

Other than that, I really enjoy this beard shampoo. The amount of lather it produces is fantastic. Other beard washes I've used required two applications. One to prep the beard, generating virtually no lather, and the second to lather and massage into the beard and skin. Just a dime sized dab of this stuff creates so much lather, I feel guilty for rinsing it off and not finding something else to clean with it.

Rinsing the wash off leaves my beard feeling super clean and soft and ready for oil and balm.

I bought some fragrance free oil and balm, but combined with the unpleasant after-scent of this beard wash, my beard ends up smelling like plastic and antiseptic. I need to find the right combination of products where I not only smell good, but feel happy about how my beard feels. Going to keep experimenting.

I hope Mountaineer tweaks the recipe on this stuff, because it so close to being awesome.

Finally I see that people complain about having to twist off the cap. No it's not ideal, but I ended up just replacing it with a flip cap from another bottle of beard wash I previously purchased. Problem solved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little goes a long way!

Tried this beard oil after checking out reviews and researching several options. It seemed to be a good quality at the right price. The smell is excellent: manly and refined, clean and crisp. It's strong but not overpowering while using, and lingers a little after a shower, but not so much that it interferes with a quality beard oil post shower.

Advice: DON'T do like I did and treat it like a regular shampoo. There's a dropper for a reason! A little goes a long way!!! I use about the same amount of wash as I would use of beard oil and it foams up excellently. Get a nice lather in your hands and massage face and skin under beard first, then work your way outward through your beard.

I have no problem seeing this last months for me with roughly a 4" beard or so. The price is great for the quantity. I'll probably use this once to twice a week. Your beard doesn't need to be "washed" every day or it can be overdone and dry out. For the most part, a good rinse with water is all it takes with some beard oil post shower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing product, packaging needs addressing

**Update** I recently bought a new bottle of this product. Mountaineer Brand has changed the cap to a much better press cap design. I've changed my review to reflex this change.

This is my second Mountaineer brand beard shampoo. Used the WV Pines first and now the Timber. I love the scent. It lathers very well and rinses with little effort. Only the smallest amount is needed and can usually wash my beard, face, neck and what little hair on the top of my head. I have zero issues with the product or it's quality.
My only problem that I wish to see addressed, the packaging. This being my second bottle I hoped it was just a singular incident, but unfortunately it wasn't. The clear plastic insert that is in the mouth of the bottle is cheap. On both bottles it was damaged, the plastic fins were broken. It does not stay on the mouth of the bottle, and care must be given so the product does spill out while pouring it into to you palm.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't know how they do it

As a ginger, I've got a stiff, wiry beard that I would readily compare to actual copper wire. I and my family members regularly get splinters of my beard hair that have to be removed with tweezers.

I tried the small bottle of this stuff a few years ago and wanted to revisit it to see if it really did what I thought it did. It did. Washing with a pea-sized drop a day makes my beard soft and smooth, so much so that I doubt it to be true, but the splinters are no longer a problem.

It also seems to ease dryness in my skin under the beard. I'm a bit of a miser, so I don't often buy anything other than food, and am often dissatisfied with such purchases, but I am entirely satisfied by this beard wash and would recommend it to anyone.

The scent took me a couple of days to get used to. It's earthy, not unlike eucalyptus, and strong during washing, but diminishes rapidly, so it doesn't bother me.

Take it from someone who has purchased numerous beard products over the years- I find Mountaineer's products to be superior! A quick look at their ingredients should clue you in. Their ingredients are simple and few which is precisely what you want to maintain a healthy beard! The shampoo cleans without drying out your beard, keeping it soft, the scents are amazing, and a little goes a long way. The oils and balms condition without the heavy oily feeling and makes managing your beard a breeze. I use a wooden comb after application and have never experienced a snag. Again, the scents are incredible! My wife loves running her finger through my beard and loves the smell!!! I will never go back to any of the many other products I have used in the past. I have finally found my beard product line!!!! Thank you Mountaineer!!!
