5.0 out of 5 starssaved my sanity and 1 of my cats
Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2020
Our cat situation was starting to look hopeless, to the point where I was ready to find another home for one of them. We'd gotten 2 sisters as kittens for our children from the shelter and they'd grown into adults with very different personalities and eating habits. One cat cannot control the speed with which she eats, which causes her to vomit immediately afterwards on our rugs. That causes her to be instantly hungry and then go foraging for food on the kitchen counters. Which her stomach cannot handle and she then throws up. The other cat is a slow eater with a dominant personality that prevents the other cat from accessing food when left out in the open. So they have to be separated during feeding. We tried the slow feed bowls but it didn't change anything -- small portions left them hungry and large portions turned into vomiting. We were feeding them small portions of wet food: 5,6,7 times a day. Still, they were constantly hungry, begging for more food, searching for it in the kitchen. They were waking my wife up at 4:30 am every morning, demanding to be fed. And the vomiting continued. Ridiculously expensive in time and money and completely unsustainable.

So this expensive purchase was a last ditch effort to save the vomiting cat, beloved by my daughter, from being removed from the home. I didn't expect it would change anything. I chose this one because it allowed for really small portions, combined with 12 different time presets, and a slow feed option. I needed and used all of those features.

Some product notes:
You're going to have to spend some time reading the manual. The user interface is not super intuitive and you'll have to pay attention to set it up properly the first time. You're going to also need some time to adjust those settings until you figure out what works best for you and your cats. I also don't think that the slow feed setting has any impact on the smallest portion size, it seems to dump out the full portion. But.

It works. We are about a month in. And this machine has changed everything. We now feed them 1 or 2 small portions of wet food a day, based on what is convenient for the humans' schedule. The machine takes care of the rest, resupplying the bowl with small portions of dry food every few hours.

No more constant begging. The vomiting has almost been eliminated (has occurred only when the machine ran out food). No more 4:30am wake up calls. No evidence of them foraging on the kitchen counter. They are visibly more relaxed. I've even observed that the vomiter is eating more slowly.

We're buying a lot less wet food. So the machine should pay for itself at some point, assuming no breakdown. But more importantly, it has saved my sanity and my daughter from heartbreak of losing her cat.

3.0 out of 5 starsWorks, but needs some improvement
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2022
We've had it for about a week now, and I can say a few things about it. First, the setup display is garbage. A simple menu would have been a big improvement. As is, making changes to the meal schedule or anything else is a frustrating experience. The manual says one thing, but some of the things don't seem to work that way, or maybe you have to be at the right place or something. We put it in 24hr mode when we did the initial setup, and there's supposed to be a way to change it back without unplugging it and starting over, but for the life of me I can't get it to work. Also, in 24hr mode for some reason it measures in ml instead of cups. The conversion between ml and cups is easy enough to get off the internet. Unfortunately, it doesn't spit out the correct volume of food. We started out with it set to 177ml which should be roughly 3/4 cup per meal. But after seeing what it actually dropped, I suspected it was more than that. So I measured it. It was 1 cup, not 3/4. My unit doesn't dispense food in 1/8cup increments like it's supposed to, it does 1/6c. The display adjusts by 1/8c amounts, but it's definitely not what it actually drops. My cats were already getting a bit portly, so knocking them down to 2/3c from 3/4 is probably a good thing, but it is a bit of a disappointment that the measurement is off.
There are some other oddities about it as well. I get the feeling that the manual is from a different version of the unit. It talks about having to push a button on the back to get the hopper to come off. While there is a button on the back, the hopper just lifts off if you've taken the lid off. And there the thing with buttons not working as the manual says.
The bowl is also fairly cheap feeling. Mine is very thin and light. It's also responsible for most of the noise this machine makes. I know some people complain about the noise the machine makes, but mine is actually fairly quiet. The kibble hitting the metal bowl is the loudest part of it running.

Bottom line is this. So far it has worked well enough. Be sure to measure what it's dispensing to be sure how much you're feeding your pets. And while the setup system is crap, once you get it set, you shouldn't have to mess with it for a long time if you're running batteries only, or...ever again if you have the AC adapter (which is not included - though it really should be) and battery backup.

5.0 out of 5 stars The PetSafe Feeder, a RELIABLE feeder, good quality, easy to program, clean & operate
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2017
Style: Healthy Pet Simply FeedVerified Purchase
Nobody paid me and nobody gave me a discount for this review.
I have done extensive reading about this feeder (publicity and customer reviews) before getting it on Amazon.

Prior to getting it, I had had a hard time choosing between the PetSafe Feeder and the Pet Feedster. Because the latter offered more options, I went for that one first. But I had to return it because it was defective and I was disappointed with the general feeling of fragility of the feeder. So I would not replace the defective one by another one of the same brand. (see my review of the product).

I was pleasantly surprised with the Petsafe feeder that I ordered after returning the Pet Feedster. I expected it to be a second best. But, I am very happy with it. It is more robust, easier to clean, the buttons respond well and all the options - including the quantity of food delivered (exact amount) - work like a charm.

Some reviews mention that the instructions are complex and that it is necessary to keep the book at hand at all time.
I disagree.
This is NOT a PLUG and PLAY feeder (same was true of the Pet Feedster and probably for most other automatic feeders on the market). It is necessary to take the time to read and follow the instructions in order to set it up right, but it is well worth your time and effort.

But the instructions are CLEAR, WELL ILLUSTRATED and EASY TO FOLLOW and everything happens/works as the book says it will.

There are 3 kinds of scheduling, “dog” “cat” and “user”.
The two first ones are preprogrammed and can be set very quickly. So if your dog of cat has no special need or if you are in a hurry, you can be done more quickly using one of those two settings. But the “user” scheduling is the real gem. It offers the most versatility (love it!).
The "user" setting is EASY and QUICK. There is really no big deal here even if it is your first time at this kind of thing. And YOU WON'T GET STUCK because any mistake can be corrected. Take a moment to read how it can be done. It's just a few steps. And you can do it quickly, It works really well. The feeding quantities can be from 1/8 of a cup to 4 cups - and they will be served EXACTLY (I measured)
Very straight forward. The buttons have a good and sure feeling to them.

CAREFUL, there's ONE STEP that is EASY to FORGET because you may think you are done AFTER adding the FOOD in the hopper. It only takes seconds for the machine to do, but YOU must push the buttons to make it happen. It is "PREPARE the CONVEYOR with FOOD." That step is the only one I find easy to miss because it is a little counter intuitive. That step is in the sequence of instructions but COULD BE MISSED.

I have set up my PetSafe without problems and quickly. I did not need to contact consumer support for help because everything is clear and up to date in the guide.

I would strongly suggest reading STEP ONE completely (cleaning & assembling) and STEP TWO (Initial Setup) all the way to “Operating mode” BEFORE starting to set up the machine - the second part of Step Two (starting with “Operating Mode”) can be read after the set up..

ALSO, The conveyor must be washed and air dry before first use (HAND washed) it does NOT go in the dishwasher plus NO HOT WATER. Also it must air dry completely before assembling. I used a few paper towels (do NOT use tissues, they will leave paper dust) and let it air dry in the suggested position in the guide.
The other “washable parts” can go in the upper part of a dishwasher. Also need to air dry before assembling.
N.B. The control panel and the base unit cannot be immersed/submerged in water

Some people have said it was difficult to modify the programming. I have to disagree. I have modified the time & quantity being fed to my cat several times already and it is incredibly EASY to do! Just you read about it once, you will see.

As for keeping the book handy, all you really need, once the initial setting is done, is to have that QUICK GUIDE sheet at hand.
That sheet comes as a stand alone sheet in addition to the manual. One side features the ICON QUICK GUIDE (you don’t really need that side): the back reads “5-BUTTON NAVIGATION QUICK GUIDE”. That’s the side you need.

It’s a quick reference to the 7 basic functions: Read/change time, Temporary suspend meals, Enter or exit slow feed mode, Get an immediate feed, Make changes to the schedule (programming), Unlock the navigation buttons, Prepares the conveyor with food.
I have laminated my quick guide and posted it at eye level above the feeder.

LOVE this feeder!

As for the guide, I WON'T DISCARD it
I will refer to it when CLEAN the machine - there are a few steps for maintenance that are different from the initial cleaning - (pausing the machine, cleaning the "crumb basket" of the conveyor and cleaning the conveyor belt, and I want to be sure to do the sequence right)

4.0 out of 5 stars Folks, this is worth it!
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2017
Style: Healthy Pet Simply FeedVerified Purchase
This is my 1st ever automatic feeder. I had it for a few weeks and really wanted to work it before writing a review. Overall all this is strong product with one flaw -

PROS
-- The design is solid and sturdy. Even if your pet knocked it over the food won't come out (tried it a couple of time). The plastic seems to block the smell of the food. You'll see the difference when you open the lid. I'm not sure if that was the intent, but my little guy isn't obsessed with getting into the food holder.
-- Once you get it working, it really works. It's been over 3 weeks and not one missed feeding. The 1st week I set the timer so I would be home for each feeding just to make sure.
-- If you use the bowl and holder, it's secure and will not move.
-- Operation is simple. Not a lot of bells & whistles here. No voice recorder, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection - it's just a damn good feeder and it just works! And that works for me and my little guy.

FLAWS
I say flaws instead of cons, because I really didn't find any reason not to keep or recommend this product. It's just a bit quirky and I have a couple of issues with the design.

-- Quirks - KEEP THE INSTRUCTIONS! Programming is NOT intuitive. It's not hard, it's just quirky and it's easy to mess up a step. The instructions are laid out nicely and everything works if you follow them.
-- Set UP - Before putting any food in this thing - and after you've cleaned it - YOU MUST MAKE SURE the conveyor belt is aligned properly. If you don't it will never issue the right amount of food. ALSO when you CHARGE the conveyor only hold the button until you hear the conveyor belt moving. If you hold it too long the pockets will be charged with food twice and the amounts will be wrong.

-- Bowl and food drop. The bowl is aluminum and deep. It sits directly under the dispenser as the food drop is straight down. My issue with this is it allows the food to pile, making it easier for the little guy to gulp his food and get sick. The other issue is the deep bowl means he has to put his head up under the dispenser to get all of his food. Some pets and owners might not find this an issue, but I did. HOWEVER, a little DIY and the problem was solved. I took a 9" x 1" cake pan and tied it to the product - I wrapped a string around both. Now when the dry food drops it bounces and spreads out. My little guy also has room to move the food away from the dispenser and eat in comfort. The string keeps the bowl from moving. If you opt fore the DIY route and use a different bowl make sure it doesn't move!

PLEASE NOTE - I filled and had to empty the thing 3 times as I kept skipping steps in the instructions. I forgot to close the lid and tipped the machine to test if the food would stay in. Apparently it doesn't stay in if you leave the lid open! I read the instructions wrong and had the thing issuing 2 cups of dry food instead of 1/4 It sounded like a Vegas slot machine paying a jackpot! I tested the food drop without the bowl. Picking up dry food from tile sucks. I say all this to say I'm no genius, but I got the thing working and it was kind of fun initially screwing it up - at least my cat thought so!

OVERALL, this is a really good product and I would recommend it. I made a lot of mistakes with the set up and programming and bowl. BUT working through them helped me discover something that's been really useful for me and my pet. This was a good buy for us. I hope it's a good buy for you...

Ok..2 years later update.. Mine has been on a cord w batteries for backup for 2 years!.. Ive never changed batteries yet..
Its Never missed a meal!
Its easier than me fillin bowl and keeps a smaller fresher amt!
Ive changed settings over time no prob

Now in last month we lost 2 kitties so now crazy kitty is alone upstairs
And my moms 2 ladies still have their own apt downstairs ( psycho doesnt
Like anyone she wasnt raised with.. And shes a fattie so now that we dont have a kd cat i can again downsize her portions and hopefully downsize her!

I just bought the ladies one.. Now its 99 not 140 so im very pleased!
I again primed it and it worked perfectly on first meal..

My fav thing other than convenience is that
Its sturdy.. It handles mixed textures ( bnb have a blend of 3.. All diff shape n size)..you can purchase a cord or use batteries.. Its portable.. And you can do tiny portions up to 12 times ( i like 4-5 small meals best!..
Its not very loud.. No one has tipped it though i have it up against something..
Very happy.. Ordered on prime..here in one day Yay!

Still love it.. and thats sayin somethin cuz our male cat is in kidney failure and lost weight so because of that we have to keep a bowl full all the time ( and for a cat that doesnt want to eat his bowl hasta b full cuz he doesnt wanna chase an eigth of a cup around wich is great for the fatties!) so it makess the timed thing kinda pointless but prior it did help them all lose weight!

It dispenses exactly the right amt every time, on time and although he has an endlessly filled bowl nearby the ladies like the tall bowl i set up with this and since it holds so much i can forget about it and just make sure his is full..

So now that i dont really have a reason to have a timed feeder, am i sorry i got it? Nope, its still a nice way to store and dispence the majority of food..
We keep b buf aging/ reg in it and just aging in the boys bowl.. hadta take urinary out cuz it is too acidic for a kd cat

This unit worked great with big fat kidney food as well as tiny bb

Resetting was Easy.. id hilighted steps that matter
Its a lot of up or down and right like settin an alarm clock
When i got to meals i only had to scroll thru till amt cuz i kept same times... and the blank meals i just scrolled thru leaving unchanged
Then hit enter button 5 seconds and good to go!

Its really much easier than i expected from reviews!

Cats seem fine with less food since its not really empty and theres multiple feed times..

I will update again : )

-------------------------------
Negatives
*Price!!
*A little daunting to program at first but read directions then go back through and should be fine
( i highlighted key parts so next time i can go through faster)
* if someone barrels into it at high speed its possible it could tip ( id suggest next to a cabinet or something if your worried about that)
* it is annoying it doesnt have a reset and that you have to take batteries out to do that..😓😓😓IM AN IDIOT AND SOOO BELIEVED THIS BECAUSE ID READ IT SO MANY TIMES IN REVIEWS, THAT I FAILED TO READ ALLLL THE INSTRUCTIONS.. SO FOR 2 YEARS IVE BEEN USING MY PATENTED COUNTERTOP TRICK TO KEEP UPRIGHT AND POP OUT BATTERIES TO MAKE CHANGES WHEN IT TELLS YOU RIGHT THERE IN BLACK N WHITE HOW TO RESET..UGGGHHHH.. SO ITS TOTALLY EASY TO CHANGE TIME AND FEEDINGS!!
------------------------------
Positives!
* although directions seemed confusing i followed them and it was fine ( wasnt sure if i could skip setting the remaining 9 meals so i just followed directions.. left them all as 12 am default and with no amt selected and its fine)
* it works as promised
*it allows me to keep a small amount of food in bowl so no one freaks out that its empty
*its fun to watch their faces when it dispenses
---------------------------
why i chose it..
* cat with uti prob ( i did get an antibiotic in case, not that im a fan of them but it was my one chance with this wild beast and we couldnt afford ( and she wouldnt allow)extraction /cultures .. so we xrayed to be sure no blocks.. gave antibiotic shot that lasts 2-3 weeks ( no pills yay) and because we saw faint grit in bladder are pretty sure has some crystals so instead of splitting a small can once a day and a whole bowl of kibble around.. they now split 2 large cans twice a day and i purchased this to keep her from gorging or from freaking at a empty bowl..
I also used uromaxx here on amazon wich i highly recommend.. although the vet wasnt familiar with it we went over ingredients and decided that it should be able to acidify her urine like the rx food would ( a better option for me because 1- she likes it in wet food and 2- its not recommended for the other cats to be on that food unless they too have crystals 3- at under 30 a bottle, more economical)
* i chose this one because after reaing thousands of reviews i liked that it proportionately had the least negative / i can do up to 12- 1/8 cup feedings / it holds a good amt / it has a power cord available to purchase and battery backup / its black so it goes with the decor of kitchen
----------------------------
some things ive noticed..
* with 3 cats sharing the canned food.. my setting of 3/8 3 times a day is a little more than i need Since they get canned twice

-----------------------------
final thoughts
YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW DIRECTION TO PRIME IT . . I hit the buttons they said till i heard it run then i decided since it didnt run very long that it might take 2 days of cycles to work but to my surprise it worked very first timed feed!
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE TO REALLY FOLLOW DIRECTIONS AND DONT SELECT default dog or cat!
*it wont do slow on 1/8 setting since each cup in conveyer is an eigth ( though ive noticed they dont really run n gobble since theres always food in bowl and they eat canned)
* MY PERSONAL FAVE IS THE NITPICKY COMPLAINTS about holding a meal or getting next meal soonerIT TAKES 2 SECONDS TO OPEN THE TOP SO YOU CAN GRAB A HANDFUL OUT.. OR DUMP EXCESS FOOD BACK IN !! ( in fact since i chose an amount thats too high ive been dumping some back in till i get it how i want it
-------------------------------
i currently use blue buffalo chicken rice although i am starting to mix in science diet active after having a tech tell me that they have several bb users with crystals wich bummed me out.. i may go to a blend of that and a uti preventative food ( i could be wrong but i think the way it works is the rx food dissolves crystals and isnt to be used in cats who dont have the problem but the non rx ut formulas may slowly dissolve but at least dont cause them.. i think this could be ok but since im not sure im thinking a mix of science diet and some uti preventative might work for all..

I DID READ THAT YOU SHOULDNT REALLY USE AN ACIDIFYER WITH RX CUZ IT MIGHT BE TOO MUCH ACIDIFICATION but i did see in reviews that many were able to use it with the otc ut maintenance or reg foods instead of rx..

I talked a long time with the company that makes uromaxx and im now thinking if i had dosed her higher right away i might have avoided all the vet madness but 1- i was worried shed detect too much of it in the food 2- i though she was 11 lb but shes 16! So if i had it to do over i would give her 2 ml a day wheras i was barely using 1 ( up to 10 lb is 1.. 10-15 is 1.5 .. over 16 is 2.5 .. so the guy i talked to said to give her 2.

And my go to to be sure she gets it all is tuna juice ( people kind).. so while not good to give all the time i would give her that at least 5 days straight to be sure she was dosed.. right now since shes been ok i do that about every third day.. and in between if she doesnt finish all her canned food in am i bump her next meal dose a little to compensate..

* i will always use canned food and in bigger amts ( the dry is low in moisture and all the plant material in it creates alkaline urine wich promotes crystals)
* ill always add in a few drops of water to canned to add extra moisture
* ill ALWAYS KEEP UROMAXX AND SOME TUNA on hand

* most cats dont like water near food.. we put bowls all over house.. they also like something plastic floating in it so they can judge depth

* stress ( in our case a relative passed and we made a downstairs apt for his cats) can actually cause cystitis in high strung cats and can help form crystals!.. so feliway ( also on amazon) helps a lot.. they make a diffuser but i like to spray it on multiple clothy surfaces like right now our tablecloth and i hang a towel on basement door.. ive used it off n on for years.. i think my mistake was thinking she was handling it ok and waiting to use it ( btw dont use near food water or litter)

SO RIGHT NOW IM VERY PLEASED WITH MY PURCHASE AND HOPING IT LASTS A LONG TIME AND I THINK WHEN WE GO AWAY I MAY BUY A SECOND ONE SO IF SOMETHING BIZARRE HAPPENED THE OTHER WOULD BE OK ( we do have people check on m every few days too)
I will definitely update!!

5.0 out of 5 stars When the cat's feeder goes missing.
Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2017
Style: Healthy Pet Simply FeedVerified Purchase
We left Zippy Cat home alone for a holiday weekend with a large bowl of food that he ate entirely in one sitting thus leaving him hungry for the next couple days. After pigging out on that bowl of Zippy Chow he stood by the back door meowing as loud as he could until the neighbor came over with a bowl of food to shut him up. A few days after we returned our neighbor told us of the annoying orange screamer and how she fed him. This is when we knew we had to get an auto-feeder. We went on Amazon and found one that looked nice, at the around $30 it would feed him twice a day for up to 4 days which would be enough. We decided to read the reviews and see how others liked it. Well, when we read the review that said "My rabbit figured out in five minutes how to get the food out of it" we knew this would not be the one for us and our constantly starved cat. My search continued until we saw the PetSafe feeder. The reviews were positive and people said their pets could not get the food out. It was a lot more than we had planned to spend and it was larger than we had wanted but we knew we could not have our neighbor making us feel guilty and our cat getting fatter. We ordered it.

We unpacked it and after a little work had it set up and programmed to feed Zippy Cat twice a day. It worked great and off we went on for the next holiday weekend. No issues. We were going to put it into the cupboard and only use it for when we were out of town but realized that while we were making dinner Zippy Cat was not meowing incessantly at us for food. Instead he would sit in front of the feeder and stare at it like he had just met God. Finally, peace and quit while making dinner, it was nice and the feeder stayed on the job 24/7. We did find that you have to fill the hopper with food now and then, there is no electronic warning. The cat will however start screaming at you over and over and over until you realize that he has not had a meal in the last three feedings. I guess no matter how much you spend on the cat and it's feeder you can still be a bad cat owner. Just remember to "Prime" the chute after it runs dry or the cat won't eat for a while again. The warnings will continue after a short break. All that aside the cat worships the thing, he sleeps near it and rubs his head all over it. It's now his best friend and if anything ever happened to it...

While out of town on day three the phone rings, it's the friend who is staying at the house for the week while we are gone but could not be there until day three. She asks, "Where is the auto-feeder".
"Right where it always is, why?"
"Because it is missing. Can Zippy Cat move it?"
"No"
"Well, it's not there or anywhere in the house"
Zippy Cat has a CatMate Elite cat door that reads the RFID in him and/or a tag he wears so that he is the only animal that can come through his door (no one likes uninvited guests, more on that later). The feeder will not fit through that so where it went was a mystery.
After talking to her for a while we realized that she had come home and opened the door to the deck and passed out on the couch. We told her to go looking for it as we have a family of six raccoons that live around our house and thought maybe they had something to do with it. Sure enough she found the feeder in the driveway, over 100' from where it started. Through the kitchen, entrance way, living room, past the couch with sleeping stoner guest, out the door, over the rail, through the garden, and out the driveway. When she told us we figured it would be a lost cause and we would have to order a new feeder, but surprisingly that was not the case. It was scuffed up, the ring for the dish was broken, the batteries still in it and the clock still functioning. We figured the 12 pounds of precious Zippy Chow would have been raccoon fodder but that was not the case. Even a family of masked burglars with thumbs could not get the tub open and the Zippy Chow out of the PetSafe Hopper. We're sure Zippy Cat was standing near by shouting instructions to them hoping for a share of the take that he never received. We were amazed.
Soon after this incident Zippy Cat found a way to stick his paw up the chute and get a little of the next meal out. We knew there had to be a problem as we had never taken the unit apart after the critters absconded with it so we figured there might actually be some damage after all. We took it apart and found that the flapper that keeps the furry things out was not attached and only needed to be put back on. A little cleaning and refilling and a DST adjustment and all is well. Now if we could just explain DST to our cat...

Pros -
Raccoon Proof
Feeds our cat
Cat no longer annoying while we are making dinner
Runs on batteries
Quiet. Enough so as to not wake stoner friend on couch (even when being dragged through house)
Tough

Cons-
Not heavy enough to keep raccoons from walking off with it
Runs out of food on occasion and has no warning feature (although cat seems to come equipped with no food warning device)
Large (not small but somehow not large enough, see above)
Not loud enough while being dragged through house to wake up stoner friend passed out on couch (maybe a raccoon alarm is needed on unit)
Bowl keeper ring kind of flimsy and hard to remove for repair
Programing not simple or intuitive

We highly recommend this PetSafe feeder and would buy again when the raccoons figure out how to carry it further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought a second after getting another pet

I like that you can program for multiple small meals and the feeder has a battery backup. We lose power fairly often so I have peace of mind knowing the cats will still get fed if I’m away and power goes out. As many have already mentioned, the setup process could be a little more user friendly; it’ll take a couple extra brain cells at first but it’s set it and forget it. The slow feed option, coupled with multiple feeding times, helps to slow the cats down since one of them is a glutton. I’ve had WiFi app based feeders, which tbh were much more convenient at first, but wildly unreliable. They’d lose connection almost daily (zero app support), and eventually would not connect anymore, rendering the feeder absolutely useless - a huge waste of money and time.

The DINK
3.0 out of 5 stars Works, but needs some improvement

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, needs a few design tweaks
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2024
Style: Healthy Pet Simply FeedVerified Purchase
This works reliably and is a great way to control portion size and meal frequency for a cat. My cat was chubby and I originally put good quality, low calorie kibble in the hopper and programmed it to feed 1/8 cup four times a day. She wasn’t eating it all so I cut back to three times a day. She did great with that and over the course of 15 months dropped 3+ pounds. Recently she has started acting like she wants more food so I’m going to bump it back up to four times a day and see if she is happier and maintains her new healthy weight.

The feeder works well but there are a few irritating features. First, if you want to change the batteries, they are on the bottom so you have to remove all the food from the hopper, remove the hopper and turn it upside down. Afterward when you put it back together and add the food to the hopper, it takes a few meal cycles before the food gets into the system far enough so it comes out in the right quantity. I have to try to remember to check it at specified times over a couple days how much food comes out to see if it’s back up to the right amount. I always miss those times because I have a life and then I feed my cat extra in case it’s not yet spitting out enough food. There is not the option of feeding on demand (to move it through that start up issue of not enough food in the system yet) without having it delete the next meal.

Second, programming it is a bear. I always have to refer to the instructions and it’s not at all intuitive. Luckily you don’t have to program it often since it seems to retain the program well but sometimes there are tweaks that you need to make to the feeding schedule and it’s a pain in the neck. To give you an idea, tomorrow is my day off work and I glumly told my husband that my goal is to figure out how to add an extra meal to the cat’s feeding schedule. It’s not rocket science but you have to press arrows a prescribed number of times, wait for certain items to blink and so on. I do it just infrequently enough that I never remember and it’s not something that makes intuitive sense. Overall though, it’s functional machine and fine. I did go back and purchase the power cord as a backup.

4.0 out of 5 stars READ for detailed comparison to Wifi SmartFeeder
Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2017
Style: Healthy Pet Simply FeedVerified Purchase
My Amazon account history shows that I am on my 4th auto cat feeder in the span of 6 years. I currently have two cats, Betsy and Tessy. I love them, but I cannot tolerate being woken at 4am, so learned that auto feeders are a must. Besty and Tessy hate each other, so each must have their own feeder. This review will compare the multiple auto feeders that I've purchased on Amazon.

Betsy is currently using THIS PRODUCT
PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed 12-Meal Automatic Feeder (which I will refer to as "Big Silver Bowl") since October 2016 (9 months).
BIG SILVER BOWL PROS:
1) It reliably shells out meow food (AS LONG AS YOU MAKE SURE CONVEYOR BELT IS ALWAYS FULL),
2) permits small portions (1/8 cup smallest),
3) can run by power with backup batteries (peace of mind and less long-term costs).
4) it quickly dispenses the food (quietly at that) but also has a slow dispense option (my cats don't like the noise of the dispensing so I appreciate being able to get it over in one fell swoop).
BIG SILVER BOWL CONS: 1) It takes a masters degree to program the damn thing. Yes, it's possible to figure it out by paying close attention. Yes, it works great when the settings are how you want them. But every time I need to do it, it ends up becoming a half hour ordeal. Why not just make it intuitive? Why must there be steps that require me to hit multiple buttons at a time to proceed (e.g., "enter and up"; "enter and left")? By the time I get my fingers on both buttons I forget which one I'm supposed to hit first. It's not a fatal flaw for this feeder, but it's absolutely a flaw worth noting especially when considering how easy the Nanny Cam is to program (see below).
2) the bowl is huge and cannot be substituted without altering the product (or else the food will fall on your cat's head while s/he is trying to eat). This flaw matters because the bowl is massive and my cat has trouble eating out of it AND because it's metal and it would be virtually silent if the food wasn't clinking on the metal during feedings. Yea, I could modify it by making an extension chute for the food (some have suggested PVC pipe) but what the heck am I paying obscene amounts for a product I need to modify to make work for my needs (confession: I don't even know what PVC pipe is).
3) it keeps poor time. We're constantly having to change the time back so it is on pace with the other cat's auto feeder or else the cats are getting fed at different time which is a recipe for World World Meow).
4) You have to buy the A/C adapter, which the product description states.
5) I also worry about Big Silver Bowl's longevity based on recent reviews of that product which suggest it craps out around the 1 year mark. OVERALL, I give it a 4/5 because the thing is so damn hard to program (a flaw which is exacerbated by the fact it keeps poor time and thus requires frequent reprogramming) and because it is very pricey for what it is ($129.99) (compare to the nifty Nanny Cam at 149.99, see below). I don't see how Big Silber Bowl can stay at the top Amazon pet feeder slot at that price now that Nanny Cam is on the market.

Since May 2017, Tessy is using
SmartFeeder,WOpet Automatic Pet Feeder for Dog or Cat,Control by Iphone,Andriod or other smart devices (White) (which I will refer to as the "Nanny Cam" feeder). Holy smokes we have a winner. For just $20 more than Big Silver Bowl feeder ($149.99) (see below) you can freakin' stalk your little divas from anywhere in the world!
NANNY CAM GENERAL COMMENTS: The instructions were in "English" but were very poorly written. They did not include any instructions on how to physically set up the feeder, just how to download the app and program it (which were also not clear, but manageable if you are somewhat tech savvy). You MUST use the AC adapter in order to program the feeder via the App (I used my iPhone 6S with Time Warner 2.4 ghz WiFi and had no issues). You MUST have backup batteries in the feeder in case the power goes out (which would disable the Wifi connection). At that point, the feeder will run off the last known programming before the power went out. It measures quantity by "portions". What the heck is a portion of cat chow, you ask? My at-home experiments showed that 1 portion is approximately 1/12th a cup of food. So, 3 portions = 1/4 a cup.
NANNY CAM PROS: 1) Comes with it's own A/C adapter (with a fairly long cord).
2) Reliable feeding even if the compartment is low and even if the power goes out (provided you have back-up batteries). Great for peace of mind while out of town. Also easy to login to modify the size/timing of the automatic feeding schedule AND can manually feed while not at home (which is an easy way to get your cats in the camera shot for funsies). Can also manually feed by pressing the button on the unit when home.
3) Camera is high quality when there is decent lighting. Try the HD setting -- the default is SD (HD uses a lot of cell data, beware).
4) Although the live voice feature might be good for some, it scares the living bejesus out of my cats, so I'd recommend trying it while home first so you can reassure them if upset.
5) seems almost impossible to open by either a dog or cat (very sturdy lid), although neither of my cats have ever been the type to attempt to break into feeders (as i've read about other cats on other feeder reviews).
6) i love that the unit itself is very simple - no conveyor belt or weird pieces to fill. Lid just flips open and you fill it. Bowl removes fairly easily for cleaning.
NANNY CAM CONS: 1) As noted above, the instructions were poor. Couldn't even find what type of batteries it took (Size D, 3 of them). Also doesn't explain what the different lights on the unit mean.
2) On that note, when the power is out, the "Alarm" light goes on on the top of the unit, but does not indicate whether or not the batteries are recognized. Would be very reassuring to know it senses the batteries and that they have enough juice to manage the feedings w/o power. Also, does alarm just indicate low power, or could it mean low food? Idk. The "set" button is the manual feed button. No idea why it's called "set" bc you don't "set" anything with it (as far as I can tell).
3) there is no clock on the unit so you need to look at the app to know the time until next feeding. you can't really do anything from the unit besides a manual feeding. I could imagine that might be tricky if you lock yourself out of your account or the person with access isn't around.
4) Because it relies on WiFi, the live video feed is only as reliable as your home Wifi connection. Will sometimes be slow to load or will freeze. However, this does not affect the feeding functionality as far as i can tell.
5) The listen feature is essentially useless because it is so sensitive. It picks up a lot of weird noises your naked ear can't hear, including the sound of the water pipe pumping water into my house (which I had no idea made a sound). So, forget about being able to hear if there is an intruder in your home.
NANNY CAM OVERALL: 5/5 - but I'd give 4.5 if I could -- the missing 1/2 star would be awarded if the unit would tell you whether or not your batteries are working. It really is an excellent product; I'm thankful for how far auto feeders have come since 2011!

The Nanny Cam was purchased to replace
Aspen Pet Lebistro Programmable Food Dispenser- 18 Cup (which I will refer to as "LeBistro"). I liked LeBistro, particularly because it was small, easy to program, and permitted sufficiently small portions. However, it constantly got food stuck in the chamber (Purina One), requiring us to pound it on the top to make the food dispense. Also, the batteries got low very quickly although the low battery warning light was somewhat deceiving - I got it to last almost 2 months with the warning light on. We noticed it more frequently got jammed when the battery was lower. (I realized AFTER i bought Nanny Cam that i could have used an AC adapter for LeBistro, so I am keeping this one as a back up in case Big Silver Bowl or Nanny Cam die). I'd rate LeBistro 3/5 due to its reliability issues. The price for LeBistro can't be beat by newer products though.

I also purchased another feeder in the past: (
topPets Large Automatic Pet Feeder Electronic Programmable Portion Control Dog Cat Feeder w/ LCD display . This one did not let you have smaller than 1/2 cup portions and it made Tessy very very fat because I had to feed her a full cup a day which is far too much for her weight. Also, this one had the most elaborate conveyer belt that oftentimes got jammed and was impossible to clean. It was bulky and had no AC adapter option. At one point I took it apart to clean the pieces thoroughly by hand and when i put it back together, it didn't work anymore. It lasted 3 or so years though, so it got good use, but I was ready for something better. Hence the above summaries.

4.0 out of 5 stars A few considerations to those who only have one small pet
Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2018
Style: Healthy Pet Simply FeedVerified Purchase
Works just as you expect it to - but here are a few things to consider before purchasing, especially if you only have one small pet:

Context - I am a cat owner and I purchased this to replace my feline PetFeedster (LOVE that feeder BTW - had for over 3 years with NO issues). With the PetFeedster (my old feeder), I was able to control the amount of food dispensed at each feeding (down to the tsp), and could program it to release food up to 5 times a day. This was essential for my vocal kitteh - she overeats when free feeding but also likes to eat at 2am and I'm not about that life. I used the finite control of the PetFeedster originally to help my kitteh lose weight without losing my mind and it worked perfectly - she went from 13lbs to a healthy 9lbs and we transitioned from diet mode to weight maintenance mode. At her new, healthy weight, the vet recommended she eats 3/8 cup of food a day, so divided by 5 that's a pretty small serving size. Now that she was eating less, I decided to find a feeder that takes up less space as I no longer had a need for a feeder with that much food storage capacity (I think the PetFeedster holds 5lbs of food or something - it was pretty large for one small kitteh).

Pros: This PetSafe feeder lets you program 12 meals a day - way more than the PetFeedster. It takes up way less space and still has a sizable food bin. I purchased the power adapter but still keep batteries as back up in case of a power outage - so far no issues with reprogramming. The feeder is pretty easy to set up and program out of the box. Once you get everything programmed you can pretty much forget about it until the bin needs to be refilled. I also like that the feeder is easy to pause for any length of time and picks up in real time once it is resumed, meaning if you pause it at 4pm on Friday and resume at 10am on Sunday, the feeder knows to dispense the next meal after 10am on it's usual schedule instead of waiting until after 4pm.

Cons: The smallest portion size is 1/8 cup. For my kitteh, that means only 3 meals a day when she is used to 5. It makes the 12 meal capability pretty useless. This feeder does has a "slow feed" option, but at the 1/8 cup serving it is, again, pretty useless. I imagine if you are using one feeder for multiple pets or with larger serving sizes, this isn't an issue, but it disrupted our routine.

Also, this operates on a conveyor belt system, and what I have found is if you are not diligent about refilling the bin, you may accidentally skip meals for your pet. If the bin is empty when the belt transitions, you are left with an empty slot on the belt that will not be refilled when you refill the main bin. They do have a "skip to the next meal" option, but I find it to be flawed. Example, when you first set up the feeder and program everything in, the conveyor belt is empty. It takes several "meal rotations" before all slots on the belt are filled and begin dispensing. However, the only way to move the belt (besides setting up a whole faux feeding schedule and then reprogramming to your actual schedule) is the "skip to the next meal" option, and you can only perform that command once between feedings. Therefore, if you have more than one empty slot on the conveyor belt, you basically have to wait it out and manually feed your pet until the belt catches up.

This can again happen if you are late refilling the bin and leave an empty space on the belt (there is still food further up on the belt, so you can hear food dropping into the metal dish even though the bin should be refilled - this has been deceiving, at least to me!). In this situation, there is no way to tell the feeder that a meal was missed due to an empty belt space, and using the "skip to the next meal" option still just robs your pet of a meal or forces you to manually feed - I'll try to explain:

Let's say you feed your pet at 2pm, 6pm and 10pm. If the belt turns to release food at 2pm, but there is no food in that slot on the belt, you have an empty dish for your pet. If you "skip to the next meal" to feed them now (at 2pm), it will dispense the 6pm portion and move down in the schedule so that 10pm is the next time food is dispensed (the current time is still 2pm). Essentially, you can only shuffle the missed meal to a later time. It gets even worse if multiple spaces are empty on the belt - at that point you pretty much have to give in and manually feed your pet until the belt catches up again. A "feed now" or "extra feeding" option would be much more useful.

The reason it is important for me to limit or eliminate the times I manually feed my kitteh is to help her learn that I am not the one controlling her food source. My kitteh is vocal and food motivated, but she learned pretty quick with the old feeder that I had nothing to do with dispensing the food, so it didn't make sense to bother me when she wanted to eat. When this "understanding" is disrupted by missed meals, she become more dependent on me as a food source, and pesters me instead of waiting to hear the food drop into her dish. It's a matter of trusting that the feeder will provide when it is supposed to, and for me that hasn't always been guaranteed or easily fixed.

Overall, this product does what you would expect it to do and beyond the few grievances I listed, there haven't been any technical or hardware issues. It doesn't quite fit my needs perfectly but I anticipate it could work just fine for other pet owners. If you made it this far, I hope you found something helpful to your decision making process!
