I recently upgraded to the Braun Series 9 9370cc Rechargeable Wet & Dry Men's Electric Shaver, and I am thoroughly impressed with its performance. This shaver has taken my grooming routine to a whole new level of comfort and efficiency.

First and foremost, the Series 9 9370cc offers a remarkably close and smooth shave, whether you prefer a wet or dry shave. The precision of the cutting elements is truly exceptional, and it effortlessly captures even the shortest hairs. I appreciate the flexibility it offers, allowing me to achieve a clean shave without irritation or discomfort.

One of the standout features of this shaver is the Clean & Charge Station. It's a game-changer for maintaining hygiene and convenience. After each use, simply place the shaver in the station, and it takes care of cleaning, lubricating, and charging the device. This not only ensures a consistently high level of performance but also saves me time and effort.

The battery life is impressive, providing several shaves on a single charge, and the option to use it corded if needed is a plus. The LED display on the shaver provides essential information about battery status and cleaning progress, making it easy to stay informed.

Additionally, the ergonomic design of the shaver makes it comfortable to hold and maneuver, ensuring a precise shave without any strain on the hand or wrist.

While the Series 9 9370cc is an investment, it's worth every penny for the premium shaving experience it delivers. The combination of performance, convenience, and build quality is second to none.

In conclusion, the Braun Series 9 9370cc is a top-notch electric shaver that has exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for a high-quality, versatile, and easy-to-maintain shaving solution that leaves your skin feeling smooth and refreshed, this is the one to choose. It's a cut above the rest and a fantastic addition to any grooming routine.

1.0 out of 5 starsAstonishingly Poor Performance
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2023
I've always felt like one star reviews are unnecessarily harsh, but in the case of the Braun Series 9, I think it's appropriate. It is the worst shaving experience I have ever had.

Let me start by saying this review is solely about the shaving performance and none of the other features, all of which I gave 5 stars. The battery life and such are great, but none of that matters if the product fails to deliver on its primary function. No one would drive a Ferrari that only goes 20 mph.

When I got the razor, I hadn't shaved in about a week so my beard was pretty thick. Since the razor is touted as working either wet or dry, I started out dry. As soon as I put the razor on my face I could feel hairs getting pulled by the razor head. I started moving very slowly but the discomfort from hairs getting tugged/plucked continued. More importantly though, in the short span of testing the razor on my beard, basically none of it was noticeably shaved. This prompted me to try a wet shave, so I wet down my beard with water and started again. This time, I was able to actually move the razor head over my skin without feeling like hair was being ripped out, but the performance of the razor was abysmal. I thought at first that maybe my technique was wrong, but it didn't matter how many angles I tried or how much pressure I applied, the razor simply COULD NOT shave adequately AT ALL. It ended up taking me 1 hour just to finish one side of my face, and that wasn't even including my mustache or beard since I was sporting a goatee. I noticed while getting close to the finish line on the first side that there were some hairs, mainly ones that were lying flat, that were impossible to cut. When I briefly lifted these hairs by brushing my finger against the grain I was able to cut some of them, which made me decide to try the other side of my face dry since hairs stand up more when not wet. Just as before, shaving dry caused some serious discomfort because of hairs getting pulled by the razor head, but this time around I was at least able to continue, albeit very carefully. Shaving dry did seem to catch more hairs than when wet, but not so much that I would trade for the discomfort. The performance was still horrible and it took forever to get an adequate shave.

I ended up using the trimmer to get a lot of hairs the main razor head couldn't catch, but even the trimmer has one major flaw: the location. The trimmer is located on the back of the razor and you push a button to slide it out. The problem is, it doesn't extend past the razor head, which makes it quite difficult to use in tight spots without the razor head bumping into facial features or even catching onto your beard. It's also difficult to see what you're doing because the bulky head is often blocking your vision.

In conclusion, the performance of the Braun Series 9 is horrendous and simply astonishing at this price point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Braun 9290CC vs Panasonic ES-LV9N-S vs Philips Norelco S9721
Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2017
Style: 9370cc ShaverVerified Purchase
I have been shaving for over 50-years, starting with a DE for several years, until Gillette introduced its first cartridge, theTrac II in 1970 or 1971. I then progressed through all the cartridges that Gillette introduced over the years. About 10-years ago I went back to shaving with a DE and even shaved with a straight razor, from time to time, along with the latest Gillette Fusion cartridge. Recently, however, I decided to go all-in on electric shaving (for the first time). I was no longer willing to deal with wet shaving: the face prep, the cream/soap, brush, bowl, the long duration shaves, the clean-up, and the blood. So, I purchased the three top rated shavers on the market: the Panasonic ES-LV9N-S (purchased from the shavercentre), the Braun 9290cc, and the Philips Norelco S9721.

All three shavers will provide a very close shave, possess excellent build quality, and have charging/cleaning/drying stations that perform well. So, my main criteria for judging a shaver is how close it shaves. I do not have very sensitive skin and shave dry (as I think this provides the closest shave). Recently, however, I have begun using Dickinson's Witch Hazel as a pre-shave prep. I just spread a little of the liquid on my face and let it evaporate for about 30 seconds before shaving. This stands-up the beard for an even closer shave, with no chance of gumming up the blades, as other pre-shaves have a tendency to do. No electric razor shaves as close as a blade, but these three models are close enough, especially considering that I can shave in about 7 minutes, versus 30 minutes for a careful blade shave (with no styptic pencil required!).

I think that the Panasonic and the Braun are very close. The Panasonic may inherently give a slightly closer shave (and a little faster because of its larger head), but the Braun is more aggressive (not overly so, but worth mentioning for those with sensitive skin) and, because of its smaller head, is able to follow the contours of the face slightly better than the Panasonic, especially at the jaw-line and neck. This was only a minor issue and became even less important as I became more proficient with these two foil shavers. As for the Philips Norelco S9721, I think that it provides the most comfortable shave of the three and, for those with very sensitive skin, it may be the best choice. However, I find that, although it is capable of providing a very close shave, IMO it places third in this respect, behind the two foil shavers. In addition, although my technique with a rotary shaver has improved greatly, it still takes me a little longer to shave with the Norelco than with the Panasonic or Braun. I prefer the trimmer on the Panasonic to that of the Braun. I think the Norelco trimmer is excellent, but it is not integrated into the body and to use it one must detach the blade head and replace it with the trimmer. This is an annoyance.

In summary, each of these shavers performed incredibly well and much better than I expected (I am never going back to blade shaving) and, if you are considering purchasing an electric shaver, you cannot go wrong purchasing any of the three. However, at this point, if I had to rank them, it would be 1. Panasonic ES-LV9N-S, 2. Braun 9290CC, 3. Philips Norelco S9721. They are very, very close in all respects and others may rank them differently, of course. So, as always, YMMV.

***UPDATE*** June 11, 2017
Now that I have spent several weeks using these shavers, I am updating my evaluation. The razor I reach for the most, the one I prefer to shave with is ... the Braun! It shaves very, very close (about on par with the Panasonic), and the smaller head does make a big difference. It is more maneuverable than the Panasonic (needing fewer passes around the jawline and under the chin, for example), and balances better in my hand. As mentioned earlier, I shave dry and both machines provide a comfortable, non-irritating shave. The Panasonic is an awesome machine but, as I said, the Braun is the one I reach for and prefer. The Panasonic thus moves to number 2. As for the Philips Norelco, it remains in 3rd place. It is capable of providing a very close shave (although not quite as close as the two foil shavers). However, it definitely takes a few minutes longer to shave with this razor than with the other two. In addition, I prefer to shave with linear strokes of a foil shaver, rather than the small circular strokes one needs to employ with the Philips Norelco. And, I found it much more difficult to shave my upper lip with this razor and to get reasonably straight sideburns (without using the trimmer) versus the other two razors. Also, as I mentioned in my initial review, the non-integrated trimmer of the Norelco is really inconvenient. So, there you have it. IMO, the Braun 9290cc is the best electric shaver on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Single-pass Shaving, Almost
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2023
Style: 9370cc ShaverVerified Purchase
I have been shaving over 50 years. I started with a Norelco, since that is what my Dad used. Liked them. About 20 years ago, I tried the Braun foil and switched. I have owned several Series 5 and 7 shavers and really liked them. My last shaver is finally at end of life (won't hold a charge & trimmer won't fold flat) and had not come with the cleaning station. After checking several reports and reviews, I decided to stay with Braun and try the Series 9. For background, I have a medium beard, it grows in a single grain and my skin is not particularly sensitive.

Wow! What a revelation! I can almost complete a shave in one pass over any area. A couple of passes, even over the tough areas, provides a fabulous result. I have an area between my chin and right edge of mouth that is bumpy and has resisted a smooth shave. This new Series 9 shaver provides a very smooth result in one or two passes. This shaver is more comfortable than any of the older Brauns for two reasons: great , new foils and it shaves so fast that you don't make repeated passes over the same skin. I also like having the Clean and Charge station again.

This is the closest, easiest shave I have enjoyed, ever. It is not cheap, but you will quickly forget the price as you enjoy a great daily shave. I most highly recommend this Braun Series 9 shaver.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.

Edit: -6 months later-

I am going to knock a star off of my review. This is a good razor. Its very, very comfortable. But it just doesnt get as close of a shave as i would like. It really helped me get over the stigma of using an electric razor. I used to buy cheap ones and get all sorts of razor burn. But this guy is so gentle. Its comfortable all throughout and so long as you shave every day you likely wont notice anything bad about it. I sure didnt untill...

I got the Arc 5 by panasonic. Yes the arc 5 is a bit harsher on the skin but it cuts so close. It gets hairs that the Braun simply struggled with. And because it cuts so much better it requires less passes and even less razor burn and fustration of me trying to get that one patch of beard.

If you have sensitive skin, or have a real problem with razor burn. Get this razor. It will make things so much easier and it will hurt far less than any other electric razor. But if you are already used to razors, and you want to up your razor game by getting one that cuts better, go with the Arc 5. (It doesnt hurt that i got the Arc 5 for $99 bucks. And even if you get the base its a cool 100 bucks cheaper than the braun.)

-Original Review-
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.

Thats not to say that this does a bad job. It is honestly the best electric shaver i have ever used. It causes virtually no irritation. Ive even had a great amount of success shaving in other areas with no issues besides my face. Even when my beard is a bit thick it normally handles it like a champ.

Thats not to say its perfect. Like many electric razors youll never call it the closest shave youve ever had. Although it does regularly get close. For truly thick beards your going to be better off trimming it down first before really going at it with the main razor. Overall, its still going to require multiple passes over the same area to get everything. And if your like me and have those flat laying hairs on your neck, your still going to have a bit of a hard time with those.

Thankfully, the built in trimmer is actually incredibly nice. This is the #1 reason i like Braun over other brands. Instead of flipping out it slides out. And instead of facing forward it faces outwards at a 90 degree angle. This makes it perfect for gently dragging and getting those thick hairs or the hard to reach kind. And unlike most other trimmers, it doesnt irritate or cut to much, but its still a bit more abrasive than the main head.

Cleaning with the base is a breeze. The sensor that detects how dirty it is, isnt always accurate. I would suggest cleaning the base and the razor head via water on a regular basis to keep the sensor itself clean. Otherwise itll be doing the full clean every single time you use it, no matter how much you used it for. But the base still does a good job of keeping it maintained and ready to use each time you want to use it. Dont be afraid to clean it yourself though. Its completely water proof so you can even take it into the shower with it. Just remember the brush is to clean the mechanisms, not the blades.

Sadly, the cleaning cartridges only last about a month so you do have to buy them pretty regularly. Thankfully, they are not very expensive. I get the lemon ones so i always get a nice smell of lemons as im clearing away my mustache.

Finally, the battery has been very good. The base makes it super easy to keep it charged up. Ive never ran out of battery while using it. Or had the razor slow down or get weaker because its loosing the charge. And ive never had a problem when taking it on short trips, but for long ones you will probably still need the charger. Again ive never found myself completely running out of power so i cant say how it will handle on a low charge but ive never had issues on my short trips.

I used to always be the kind of person obsessed with getting a close shave. I tried a lot of different non electric razors and safety razors. Some good and some bad. But the amount of effort that goes into shaving via these methods is quite a bit of work. Hence the beginning of my review. If something is worth doing, its worth doing poorly. Using an electric razor every day to give myself a clean shave look despite not being super close, is a lot better than waiting for a few days and looking scruffy and gross with a spotty neckbeard.

Its just easy and good.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a huge upgrade and improvement
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2023

So, I've got to tell you about this new shaver I got, the Braun Series 9 9370cc. Man, it's like stepping into a sci-fi movie compared to my old 3000 series!

First off, holding this thing feels like shaking hands with the future. It's sleek, ergonomic, and doesn't do that awkward dance in your hand like the old one. Using it feels less like a chore and more like I'm a master barber giving myself a VIP treatment.

Now, let’s talk about the tech magic happening here. The Series 9 has these five shaving elements that work together like a well-oiled boy band - harmonious and efficient. It's like it knows your face better than you do! Remember how the 3000 series would miss spots and I'd end up looking like a patchwork quilt? Yeah, not happening with this one.

And dude, it’s a wet & dry shaver. I can go full luxury mode with foam and all, or just dry shave when I'm late because I snoozed my alarm seven times. Flexibility is its middle name.

The Clean & Charge Station is where it truly knocks the 3000 series out of the park. It's like having a tiny robot butler for your shaver. It cleans, charges, and even sings it a lullaby (okay, maybe not the lullaby part). But seriously, it keeps the shaver in tip-top shape without me lifting a finger.

Battery life is another win. It lasts longer than a movie marathon, which means fewer charges and more time being lazy. And traveling with it is a breeze. No more shaver rattling around in my bag like a loose cannon.

In all, upgrading to the Braun Series 9 9370cc is like going from a flip phone to the latest smartphone. It’s a smooth operator, a gadget wizard, and it makes the 3000 series look like a relic from a bygone era. If you ever decide to treat your face to some luxury, this is the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Closest shave I ever had!
Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2022
Style: 9370cc ShaverVerified Purchase
Ok, so I have had a lot of earlier experience years ago with electric razors and found the experience very unsatisfying! I was prone to getting razor burn that was so common back in the day... my earliest experience was mostly on very early models I tried borrowing them from my dad, and then years later using various Norelcos...
I gave up due to unsatisfying results, razor burn etc...
I've always been an every other day shaver and for many of shaving years used blades. I remember liking the early Bic disposables a lot! Then later, when Gillette came out with the tri-blade fusions, I was sold... never looked back and have shaved that way for several years... so seeing a Braun unboxing video one day on youtube and being bored, i checked it out and loved the look of the Braun design and the cleaner/charger... I thought; Wow this looks like its come a LONG way... but I was skeptical... I started watching videos and comparing different models, everyone seemed to have their favorites and it came down to probably three names...
I read reviews and kind of determined you likely would not go wrong with either of the top three, but it then would come down to design and accessories!
After all my research, I settled on Braun because of design and the very cool accessories! I went with the series 9 and chose the cc version because of the cleaning charging stand, which I loved the idea of!
Of course after I bought it, I was still looking at videos while awaiting its arrival... I started second guessing my decision and wondered if I shouldn't have gotten the pro version... the pro can come with either a leather case or the very cool charging case...
I was really concerned also that maybe the pros shave was a bit better and because of my earlier experiences with electrics, I thought maybe I mighta erred and for the money I spent, I hated to think I had not gotten the best shaving version...
The long and the short of it is, I did a lot more research and video reviews and came to the conclusion most of the differences with the pro were accessories and a new head design that is on some new pro models. The heads for the newest pro are not even available yet in the USA (to my knowledge) and when they are, any series 9 can use them! Phew! So I really hadn't made a mistake! At least in buying an inferior razor!
Well today the razor arrived! Having a day off and 2 days growth of beard, (my beard I think is avg, not overly coarse or thick, not fair or light either!) I was excited to test it out!
The worst part of a new Braun arriving is that it does not arrive charged! But I knew that having seen so many videos... charging time is only about 1 hour anyway, so I set up the cleaning charging base and installed the cleaning and lubricating fluid cartridge... then i had to wait...
I let it sit for a couple of hours, (I had also started the cleaning cycle on it even though it was a brand new shaver, I figured a cleaning and lube couldn't hurt it!!) The cleaning is also a lube for the shaving heads, so why not.
Anyway, I finally tried it out! It was still slightly damp from the cleaning, but not really wet, (a lot of people in reviews said it often does not fully dry for 24 hrs, but no biggie, its designed for the razor, your face, etc... and the smell is pleasant!)
Bottom line? What a terrific shave! I did the initial shave and was surprised how quickly it took down my beard! I did go back over it again in a different direction after feeling my face, (which looked completely smooth!) and gave a few strokes in a different direction just to polish it up!
My face felt mostly baby smooth! Something I am not used to even with a blade! It also went way faster than my normal shaving routine which I always normally do only after a shower!
I am extremely happy with this razor! If the rest of my shaving goes like this, I am one lifelong Braun customer!!
One or two last things, I found a charging travel case on ebay for about a hundred and decided to buy it! Under normal use, i will be using the cleaning charging stand to clean, charge and store it in my bathroom, but for flights/road trips of a week or so? I will use the travel/charge case to keep it charged until I return and can drop it into the cleaning charge stand.
And lastly, I do plan to use the cleaning cartridges and stand as an everyday thing! It's funny, in many youtube unboxing reviews, I see people saying; I doubt I will use the cleaning charging stand... or some post videos of how you can save money washing out the cartridges and refilling them yourself... the cartridges do a very necessary and helpful service by both cleaning and disinfecting, and lubricating the shaver head!
Yes, you can probably save a few pennies by washing them out and refilling as long as you are adding in the correct fluids, (and you need to make sure the right lubrication/disinfectant, etc is added) but the cartridges at the end of the life of it is NASTY! Check out a few youtube videos! The stand has been cleaning hairs, dirty grime and oil from your face and beard for a month or two!
Personally, I don't need/want to handle it! Theres a pop off cover on the cartridges and you should save it and recover it if you plan on recycling or tossing it out so the nasty stuff isn't spilling out!
I bought a 6 pack of cartridges and did an Amazon subscribe and save which put my cost, (with free shipping!) at about 5 bucks a cartridge! The cartridges last about a month or two depending on use...
I'd rather spend the 50-60 a year and just buy the cleaning cartridges which help prolong the razor and the shaving cartridge's life! With proper care, shaving heads last up to 18 months! Spend your money on the cleaning cartridges and your razor and shaving heads will probably last longer!
Hope this was helpful! So far I am very, very happy!

I’m new to electrical shavers to be honest. Always relied on traditional razor blades shavers because every time I tried electrical shavers my skin would get irritated and the save was painful and uncomfortable! Well this shavers is a game changer. It’s convenient and painless to shave with this machine. I shave more often than I ever did before. Sometimes I shave every day. This is unheard of for me to shave this often because my skin would get irritated so had to give few days to recover. Anyway I really like this shaver. The cleaner machine is also very convenient. Cleans and lubricates the machine when needed. Great shaver.

TL;DR:
---------
After trying top of the line wet & dry from Braun (both 7 & 9) and Panasonic (Arc 5 - LV9N model) - I ended up keeping both the Braun series 7 and the Panasonic Arc 5. In my testing, the Arc 5 offers the best shaving, even if marginally so, and I prefer it as my everyday shaver. However, the Braun 7 comes close, and it is more compact, thus making it my travel choice, and why I ended keeping both. Braun 7 also offers best value for money. The Braun 9, in my opinion, offers no real advantage over the Braun 7, yet costs more and is bigger.

Disclaimer
--------------
After reading plenty of reviews online - it appears that unlike many other types of products, there is no one answer here. Each shaver has different design and therefore works better on specific types of faces. So what works best for me may not work best for you and vice versa. This is why I ended up buying and trying few of these products…

Having said that… review in depth:

The Competition
----------------------
I initially bought the Braun 7 (Wet&Dry, 7865cc) and was actually very happy with it. So happy that I realized I will be moving to shaving with a shaver from now (vs Gillette blades), so I decided to check out maybe there are benefits buying a higher end model.

I then ordered the Braun 9 (Wet&Dry, 9290cc). In my opinion it offered no real benefit so I ended up returning it.

Then I ordered the Panasonic Arc 5. Note that the Arc 5 has two “current” models - the LV95 (which is not noticeably more expensive than the Braun series 7), and the LV9N, which is still new and therefore costs 300$. The latter is considered to have better comfort over the former, and given that my neck area is a tad sensitive I figured it was worth the extra. The LV9N is the one reviewed here - I have no experience with the LV9S.

Quality of Shave
----------------------
Naturally, this is the most important feature of a shaver, so I will start with that. I find all three shavers to offer really good shaving. In fact, I was very skeptical coming into this (I used to shave with Gillette up until this point), and while none of these offer as smooth as a shave, the difference is really, really, small.

The Braun 7 was the firs tin the bunch, and I was really surprised with the closeness of the shave it offers. I got into this “adventure” a bit skeptical, but after trying the Braun 7 I realized this is good enough for me 99% of the time, and is faster and more comfortable than regular shaving.

I then tried the Braun 9 to see if it can offer closer more comfortable shave as suggested by some reviews. It did not, not for me at least. Even though the head is larger and there are more cutting blades, I did not feel any real difference. Apparently one of the big selling points of the Braun 9 is its ability to better cut longer hair (3+ days of growth). This is not a real use case for me so I did not see an advantage there. In both one day old hair and two days old hair - the results were quite identical. (As a side note I will say this - I find that going over 2 days without shaving makes it quite hard for a shaver to get great results. In the few instances where I skipped shaving, I realized it was easier to just use a cassette blade for that).

Finally I tried the Panasonic Arc 5. The Arc 5 is also quite big - but here you get something in return. The shave is ever so closer. Is it a huge diff? Not really…. But when shaving one side Braun and the other Panasonic, my wife can always tell which one is the Panasonic one. This is true right after shaving, and also 3 or 6 hours after). It is also a tad faster to shave with, esp with one day long hair, although again, the difference is small, as I need to do a similar process with all shavers (i.e. I can go only in a single directions on my face, but have to criss-cross in my neck area which is harder to shave - and that is true with all 3 shavers).

Comfort of Shave
-----------------------
Comfort of shave was the biggest concern for me going into this. Roughly 20 years ago I tried buying a shaver and was very distressed by the rash I got. I gave up shavers since and not tried them until now. I can say all three shavers are very good in this respect.

The Braun 7 is a very comfortable shaver. I had very very mild itching in the first couple of days in my neck (which is sensitive), but they went away and never had a problem since, even when skipping 2-3 days of shaving.

The Braun 9 is similarly comfortable. Some claims say it is more comfortable, and that may be true for some - but I did not feel any difference.

Regarding the Arc5 - It’s hard for me to give a similar review as I tried it already after using the braun for some weeks (and thus my skin got used to the electric shaving first). Today, I do not feel any difference in comfort between the Arc 5 and the Braun 7. I can, however, say that in the second or third day of using the Arc 5, I had some rash on my neck - it was a combination of shaving rather “aggressively” (i.e. pushing) and having a day with a lot of physical labor (i.e. sweating), so it’s hard to put all the blame on the Arc 5. Nonetheless, it was there and it was so notable I skipped shaving the day after to let it relax. This has not occurred since again, and so now they offer similar comfort. Some reviews I read on the previous model (the LV95) suggest comfort is a little less perfect there, so point to be taken.

Handling
------------
I like holding the Braun 7 the best. It is compact (which also makes it better for travel), and it feels more solid (probably because of the size/weight ratio). I also like the type of plastic it is made of. It’s a great shaver, really. Both Arc 5 and The Braun 9 are noticeably larger, which is sort of a disadvantage, esp. above the lips area. They also feel less solid (even though they are not), with the Braun 9 scoring the last place here in my opinion. The Arc 5 has the best locking and trimming mechanism in my eyes, and also offers two axis of movement for the (large) head, while the Braun 7 only offers one axis of movement (but its smaller head makes it a little less required). Bottom line, if they all shaved the same, I would use only the Braun 7.

Display
----------
The Braun 7 has a very basic “display” while the Arc 5 offers more data and the Braun 9 even more. If you ask me - this is all complete waste of electronics and cost. The only thing to really care about is battery life. The braun 7 is a little more basic in it, while the Braun 9 and Arc 5 offers more granular data (Arc 5 shows it in percentage in jumps of 10%). The rest of the data, like “how long did you shave” etc - is meaningless, at least to me. In any case, for my use case, the Arc 5 and Braun 7 are “opposite”. The Arc 5 offers more granular battery life, but I intend to use it at home only, whereas the Braun 7 is intended for travel. I would consider all of this non-decision point anyway.

Cleaning Station
----------------------
All three models come with cleaning stations. For me this was non negotiable as I do not like to waste time on cleaning etc. Looking back, I may have bought the Braun 7 without the cleaning station as it is mostly for travel, although I think even this way I would be happy to come back from a business trip and just throw it to the cleaning station rather than starting to take it apart.

All 3 cleaning stations seem to be working similarly well, although in different approaches. The Braun stations look a little cooler, and offer a 3 level indicator as to how dirty the shaver is (low/medium/high), where as the Panasonic Arc 5 only shows you where it thinks you should clean it or not.

The Brauns use “cassettes” of cleaners which come with the fluid inside. It is flammable and thus harder to carry with you for travel if you travel longer and want to carry the unit. They are also harder to order (will only ship by ground shipping etc.), and more expensive. The Panasonic uses a soap based solution which comes in nice small packets. It takes a few seconds longer to mix it with water but its not a big deal.

Bottom line - hardly a decision making point either…

Conclusion
---------------
You can’t go wrong with either of these models. As I said above - I ended up staying with the Braun 7 as my travel shaver and the Arc 5 as my home shaver and I’m happy with both.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Experiences, Some Good, Some Bad, Sum Is Meh

I buy a new razor about every 5 to 10 years. My previous razor was the Philips Norelco Shaver 8800 (Model 1290X/40) which was 10 years of face rubbing torture which I tolerated until I decided to jump ship and buy this Braun model. Naturally some of my expectations and comparisons derive from that previous ownership experience as well as specific attributes that desired improvements.

I was looking for a razor that would tolerate my lifestyle which was to shave every so often and not religiously every day. At a minimum it had to cut facial hair that had grown up to three days and not make my face feel like it was on fire due to irritating burn caused by razor friction. This razor offered at least the ability to cut facial hair the way I desired to live so I went for it.

The first thing I want to say is that I'm slightly happier with this razor than my last for only a few reasons. First is that doesn't give me anywhere near the amount of facial burning feeling after I'm done shaving. I don't know why that is because I'm raking my face with the razor about the same amount of passes to get the hair to actually cut. Perhaps it's the pressure applied per square inch of the razor or maybe the metal chosen to manufacture the razor could have a coating that glides on skin better. Second is that the effort required to clean this razor daily is much less than my previous razor which was a rotary style so maybe that's key. Third is that it cuts my facial hair eventually with much effort and change of techniques required for different scenarios and regions of the face. It seems like the total amount of time required to achieve a satisfactory shave is slightly less than my previous razor.

So now begins my negative comments which in volume are many, but the main goals are met so it balances out at least to me.

I do enjoy the razor is self cleaning, but I dislike that this generates a huge amount of plastic waste as designed! They could modify its design so that its easy to clean and flush out with refills coming in economical and environmentally friendly bottles that are easier to store at home with less waste and cost. I have chosen to buy new refills extending the life by one extra month with 90+% rubbing alcohol added when needed due to evaporation and then use an aftermarket refill packet product to clean/refill at least once before discarding and replace with new again. This way I can offset the landfill footprint slightly and get some small economic balance in cost.

The razor's self cleaning cycle design demands the razor's battery is always float charging. The razor should be allowed to cycle the battery power to some minimum low before the base station decides to actually charge it. I'm not sure about this, but the way its designed seems like it could be shortening the battery life by opting always to charge no matter what. The base station needs more brains to do this of course, but its not unreasonable and probably won't cost much in electronic components to make it possible.

This thing is stupid loud! I hate shaving in the early AM before my significant other wakes up because I become the pre-alarm alarm which sets the mood for a bad day! My dog usually runs away when I fire this thing up so it must hurt the ears.

I feel like I'm holding a small brick in my hand when I'm using this. My hands are not small so I would imagine for some this feeling is actually amplified. Its not a once in a awhile feeling either! Its pretty much an uncomfortable things to wield that jabs forward into conscious thought way too frequent! My previous razor was slightly cone shaped which fit the hand much better. I haven't dropped the razor yet, but if I do drop it then its likely its because its shaped like a small brick.

The lock mechanism to hold the position of the blade is ridiculously weak and therefore a useless feature. it slips out of lock way too easily so I've just stopped trying to bother using it.

The trimmer seems to try to be stylish rather than practical. It takes quite a bit of effort to get the trimmer to convince a hair to get cut because of its curved shallow blade design. Unfortunately, because the razor doesn't work well against some hairs that lay on the skin particularly in the neck region this trimmer is absolutely necessary, but requires some patience getting hairs cut. The shaped like a small brick issue also adds to the joy of having to handle the razor at different angles to trim.

The marketing photo showing a clean shave on long hair in what appears to be one pass appears to be misleading. I find this razor works best when dealing with two day growth hairs that grow perpendicular to the skin. Hairs that grow parallel to the skin or end up laying down after time are a chore to get cut with this razor. The blade appears to lack any designed hole pattern to lift hairs that end up growing this way which eventually demands more force, more passes, change of direction, or invoking use of the trimmer to convert it to stubble which does seem to get cut easier.

Not surprising to me since its not promised as a feature is that when cutting longer hairs beyond three days old the razor tends to pull/rip hairs rather than cut. I don't hold this against the razor as an expectation, but do wish to point that out. The approach I have for this is to use a hair trimmer (avoid the razor's trimmer for anything more than you have to as it too will pull hair instead of cut when its long) and then return with this razor to cut.

The eye watering cost of this razor forces you into wallet loyalty! To some degree the cleaning mechanism of this razor binds you into vendor lock-in. At this cost tier I would like to have it randomly complement me, tell me a joke every once in awhile, read me an audio book, or second as a room motion detection alarm system.

I'll probably keep this razor around for as long as the battery holds out unless something better comes along with raving reviews and better lifecycle management/cost. There's nothing worse than having shave anxiety because you fear using the razor because its unpleasant to do so. I don't think this razor is in that department, but if the blades get dull I bet it could easily create that feeling!
