Nice overall beginner machine

I decided to learn how to sew in my retirement...and this was the machine with a decent amount of easy features. its not particularly difficult to operate or thread up. And it does not operate like a child's machine. Plus, it didn't have any ridiculous flowers and pink colors slathered all over it like some machines, which i guess is designed to appeal to little girls and grandmothers. I would recommend this machine for beginners and if you expect to grow and do more advanced projects. Its sturdy yet lightweight...the shell is plastic like most machines you see, but it does not seem overly cheap or flimsy. The decorative stiches are limited and not overkill. The monogram font is small and probably useless in most circumstances but i could see sewing your name and your prison numbers on your prison uniform if you had to. lol

The machine is just ok; not as horrible as I first complained. Customer support is terrible. The young men I spoke with were very nice and really wanted to help but they were totally unprepared. They read the same manual I had. I asked the second one if he had ever used a sewing machine and he said Never!

I do not find the manual helpful and neither did either of the two young men I spoke with. I hung up with Support and took my machine apart and put it back together several times and finally It started to sew a straight stitch. I don't know what I did but the third time was the charm.

I love this thing. I learned how to sew on youtube so my level of skill is fairly close to zero but still the machine is easy to use and does a great job. I have been able to do a lot of things and even make a couple of dresses not to mention add some pretty patterns on some existing and plain clothes. Very durable as well considering I misused it on plenty of occasions, like threaded it wrong or put the wrong needle in or such other beginner mistakes and yet it does not seem to be at all bothered and I’ve now had it for quite some time. I liked it so much I even bought my mom the same one so she can play around too :)

Best home machine for the intermediate/expert level seamstress. The Brother XR9550 computerized machine is a dream to operate and easy to learn BUT it has too many features for a beginner. (A novice would do better with a simpler machine until they master straight and zigzag sewing on a variety of fabrics.) This machine is a perfect gift. The top 10 best features are: the machine is light weight-older people can easily move this machine making it very convenient. The built-in stitch options are displayed on the machine and the LED selection box is easy to read, well placed. The automatic needle controls (needle down/ backstitch) are comfortably placed if you're right- handed. Love the automatic needle threader! The trick is to keep the thread taunt across the U bracket. (I never figured out how my previous computerized machine auto threaded.) A big plus of the Brother computerized sewing machine is the ease to select and change stitches. The amount and variety of the built-in stitches is perfect! The embroidery option is fantastic! It takes time to set up the lettering but worth it because it sews a crisp print. I donate items to various personalized items to clinics so this feature is important to me. The only con is that the pressure foot tension cannot be easily adjusted for thicker materials. This is the best, most versatile sewing machine for experienced seamstresses.

Where should I start? The machine is beautiful and although mostly plastic, is balanced and easy to learn. It has many stitch patterns and seems like a dream come true. Not so. It does not have power to see several thicknesses of fabric. It slows down, stops and breaks needles. The machine goes “thump thump thump” and shakes if I try to sew a heavy material. To its credit, it has dozens of useful stitches that are like embroidery and. Their effect can be modified by using the machine adjustments. I’ve used this machine for fancy topstitching and switched to my Singer for power stitching

I recently dove into the world of sewing and crafting with the Brother Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine, equipped with 165 built-in stitches and a host of modern features. Here’s a rundown of my experience:

Pros:

The easy threading system is a dream come true, making setup quick and hassle-free.
An abundance of stitch options means the sky's the limit for creativity. It sews beautifully, handling a variety of fabrics with ease.
Cons:

The mini table extender, intended to provide extra workspace, often feels more cumbersome than helpful.
I've found the auto sewing function less intuitive than the traditional floor pedal. It’s a feature I've steered clear of, sticking to what I know best.
Surprisingly, for a machine marketed towards sewing and quilting enthusiasts, it lacks essential accessories like quilting feet, a stitch in the ditch foot, and a walking foot.
The horizontal thread placement has been problematic. My thread has caught on spools and broken mid-project, an issue I attribute to this design choice. It seems like a ploy to purchase additional accessories to prevent thread mishaps.

The build quality leaves something to be desired. Compared to the solid feel of vintage machines like my mom's 1950s Kenmore, this machine feels flimsy, as if made from a lower grade of plastic.
In summary, while this Brother machine offers a range of features that cater to both beginners and seasoned sewers, it's not without its flaws. The learning curve is expected, and I'm gradually getting to grips with its quirks. However, I can't help but wish for the sturdiness and simplicity of older models. A machine with such potential shouldn't cut corners on build quality or essential accessories. Here's hoping future iterations will address these concerns.

I have a very expensive and very good Janome sewing machine, which I love. I bought this as a second "backup" machine, but it is definitely a good machine for both beginners and experts, well-thought out and well-made. It has a very quick learning curve and even a beginner can start a basic sewing project within minutes. Highly recommend. Don't like the carrying case, but I have no need for it, so I will not deduct points for it. The bobbin winding is the best and sewing is smooth, solid, and precise. Definitely a positive experience and a great value.

I was sewing a skirt for Halloween and it was a nightmare! In my rage I broke something on my machine. Since I don't live on Elm Street I decided to get a new machine.
What a dream! I was able to start a whole new skirt and finish it hours, not days. My sewing confidence has increased! I may even buy a dress form now.
I have strong feelings about tools in general. You need a tool that can do the job or you wont enjoy using it. This machine is priced well for a beginner, and simultaneously sews well enough that they will enjoy sewing. Being intermediate, it was a long overdue purchase.

I received the sewing machine for xmas, and just got to unpacking it in February. I was missing some needles listed in the included accessory list. I contacted Brother CS and spoke with one of their agents, was told that it was past the 14 days allowed for missing parts window. My other option was to return the entire machine for a few missing needles, which seemed ridiculous. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and after a long wait, spoke with someone who made an exception to their general rule, and said she would send me the missing needles via ups. After two agents, and lots of hold time, they made me happy, and resolved the issue.
