Overall, this shave oil delivers a very good quality to price ratio, and I am inclined to recommend it. But, is it the best at what it does? Detailed ratings to follow.

Packaging - 5/5: Nicely boxed and labeled. Looks classy and professional, which tends to foster confidence in the product inside. So, good start there. Bottle has a nice little pump, which makes for easy dispensing. Very nice touch.

Scent - 4/5: While probably not the most photorealistic, bougey (sp?) rendition of sandalwood, I'm inclined to give this one high marks. It smells good to me. Some sandalwoods come off smelling like baby wipes to my nose - this one does not. Very close to what I was after, if a bit muted. Could be a bit stronger, but then I also wouldn't want this to trample all over whatever fragrance I decide to wear. As it is, it's noticeable and also complimentary, all without being intrusive.

Comfort/Protection: 3/5: I have to be honest here. It is a bit on the thin side for me. My guess is the overuse of grape seed and olive oils to cut the thickness of the castor oil in it. I would have gone with less. But again, to be fair, I've used other shave oils that were so thick as to be kind of sticky and requiring some extra cleanup after shaving. This one does not. But it also doesn't protect quite as well. Good enough, but if I'm splitting hairs here (pun intended), I'd wish for something a bit clingier for better skin protection, even at the expense of the aforementioned negatives. Comfort first!

Cleanup - 5/5: This stuff - again because it's relatively thin, does clean up very easily, requiring little more than a quick cold water rinse. And again, it smells damn good, so I'm not really inclined to want to clean it off anyway. :)

Bottom line: Smells great, a bit thin. May actually blend it with a thicker variety to get the best of both worlds. Kind of wish they made an entire line using this scent or a somewhat stronger version of it. I'd even buy a big bottle of this stuff to use as hair styling oil (dry scalp/hair). It's early, but assuming I can get past its minor comfort/protection shortcomings, I'll probably be buying this oil again once my bottle runs out.

Game-changing performance. I really love this stuff. I bought the original scent. I'm interested to try whatever else they have. It's not a strong aroma. Not sure if anyone else is going to notice unless they're really close, but for me it's a scent that reminds me I'm worthwhile.
I should tell my story: when I turned 18, Gillette sent me a free mach 3 razor with a "Be All That You Can Be" reminder for draft registration. I've used that handle for years. The blades are expensive, but it worked so I kept up with it. Then Gillette made their war on masculinity ad. I know that my personal decision to boycott Gillette isn't going to matter to them. But I also know the feeling I got every day picking up that stupid razor. Every time I saw it, it reminded me that I'm garbage. As a 36-year-old single man who always wanted to get married, but hasn't been able to make that happen yet, I know that everything in that ad said that I'm not needed, showing interest in women is wrong, and that anything masculine about me needs to be shut up and thrown away. So I made a decision to switch to a safety razor like thousands of others. Shaving is a daily ritual that can help you or hurt you. shaving with Gillette products makes you feel like a degenerate byproduct like car exhaust or deforestation. Shaving with a safety razor and this pre shave oil, makes me feel like I'm worth something. It makes my shave closer and smoother than anything I've ever experienced before. The smell makes me feel valuable. I leave my bathroom feeling like I've paid to have a shave at an expensive barber shop. Every whiff I get of it throughout the day reinforces that feeling. I don't believe Gillette is right about men. I think they're a stupid misguided company trying to make a buck off SJW politics. Be a man. Treat yourself like one. Buy this oil, rub it all over your face and neck every morning and feel like you ought to. Excellent stuff that doesn't try to sell itself as anything other than a shaving product, but unintentionally imparts a message of self-worth and value to the men who use it. Thank you for making a great product I'll continue to use the rest of my life. I'm sold.

This is the 4th shaving oil I have tried and it is turning in to the best choice. I first tried one from the art of shaving (I saw the shop in a mall). I liked the oil but the bottle was a real pain as it doesn't have an applicator, so you open it and end up wasting some because too much pores out. Their oil is thicker than this one but American shaving' has a great applicator to give you the amount you want every time. As far as the art of shaving's oil is thicker I found that to be more of a problem than a plus. First off it leaked in my kit while traveling and at $16.00 an ounce it was a real waste plus it did leave a lot of residue oil. The others I tried were ok but I was not that impressed with the results. I do have a beard so I am just shaving the neck area and cheeks. The American Shaving oil works great in that it is all I use. I don't use shave cream and so far I am getting the best and closest shave I have ever had. When I apply the oil I also put some on my beard and it has made it much softer so it doubles its uses. The company seems to be all about customer service, I had a few questions and their reply was rapid and helpful.
Update. April 27,2018. Now that I have been using this product for just about 6 months I must say it is the best shaving product I have used. I am able to get about twice the life out of my blades while still getting a great shave.
Another update. Feb 2019, yes I am still using the product and they have made some changes but this is still a great product with fantastic customer service.

I bought this for my husband and needless to say he is thrilled with this product. Since he has been the one using it I asked him to write the review:

This is the first product of its kind that I've tried as a normally would have went straight to the shaving cream. Skeptical at first, this proved to be something that I will now always have in stock whenever I shave from now on. The blade was able to glide more smoothly over my face along with a much closer cut. To be sure I wasn't hyping myself on it, I tried shaving off and on with and without it. It definitely performed a consistently closer and nicer shave every time I used it. Upon applying the pre shave oil, I noticed the razor (which was the same brand I always use) cut through the facial hair with ease.

The shave was extremely close and the oil softened my facial hair enough that there was no pulling of the facial hair when the razor was used. Above all, there was no discomfort at all after the shave. Not only would I recommend this product to someone, I actually did after the very first shave. Since that time, I have shaved with this product daily and it is now my shaving product of choice. My only regret is that I hadn't found this product sooner. I found out the oil has a great purpose, and will no longer be ignored. Very happy my wife bought this product for me!

Great scent, oil could be thicker

I wanted to try a new pre-shave oil. My normal brand is Art of Shaving, but wanted to see what was available for less. I saw many oils, but this one was well recommended and I thought of buying from such a focused company would be a good shot. Got the package and smelled it - wow. The sandalwood is really well done. The pump is also very handy in usage. The only thing is, it is a very "light" oil on the skin. It coats well enough, but when I get to my final pass shaving, I know it is no longer there protecting my skin - which my usual oil does. Now, if you don't do 3 passes on your skin in different directions - this is a great oil. If you do, you might need a thicker formula. For reference, I shave in the shower and use a badger brush for my shaving cream.

After Gillette made clear they no longer want my business I switched to traditional DE shaving. I experimented with DE shaving about 12 years ago but gradually drifted back to disposables because it takes less time. But I'm back to DE to stay!

Last time around I never bothered with pre-Shave oil--just lathered up and commenced cutting. This time around, I decided to see if an oil would improve my shaving results. The answer is an unqualified "Yes!"

American offers a reasonably priced product here that smells great and gets the job done. The smell won't overpower you but it's quite noticeable. It's a clean, rugged scent--it smells like a Clint Eastwood Western. In addition to this product I purchased American aftershave balm (also in Sandalwood). My face is smooth is the proverbial baby's bottom, my skin feels great and is free of all bumps and irritation. As a nice little afterthought, American included a coupon for 10% off my next purchase. I recommend this product to all the guys out there who are discovering (or re-discovering) wet shaving. I'll be coming back for more, American!

Not a bad preshave oil

This stuff is decent for what it is. The smell is nothing fancy. It’s just the oil scents that are kind of woodsy I guess. You get a decent amount of it compared to some other options for the price. I’ve used several preshaves over the years and I’m still on the fence about whether there’s value in them or not. I’m guessing certain skin types and those that experience a ton of razor burn might get the most benefit from this product. I wet shave using a DE razor, brush and quality creams and soaps and pretty much once I switched to that years ago I don’t experience much razor discomfort so guys should definitely look into that if your shaves aren’t great with cartridges. PSO might help with guys using electrics, but then I’m not sure how this would effect the cutting heads over time. I guess my point is if you’ve never tried a PSO then don’t expect some miracle in how your shaves go. If you’re already doing a good shave prep and using a quality soap or cream with a brush you’re probably even less likely to feel much difference using this.

I have tried several pre shave oils and I have to say that for the money this stuff is awesome. The scent for both the sandelwood and original is nice but doesn't stick around. It makes for a nice shave and if this stuff cost more it would be an issue but for the price it's a mute point. The oil has a nice slickness to it but not so slick as your hands slide off your razor while saving. It also comes clean under running water so it doesn't gunk up your razors. I will be buying again. Which won't be for a while because they give you quite a bit for very little cost.
