There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
About 1 1/2 years ago or so I began to notice that I was always getting razor burn on the sides of my upper lip and on the sides of my chin just below my mouth on either side. I tried all kinds of lotions, after shaves and different cartridge disposable razors, and while some helped it never went completely away and would irritate me even a day later.
I had come to the understanding that my skin had become more sensitive as I had gotten older.
So after some reading and talking with my barber, I decided to try going to an "old fashioned" double edge like my dad used many years ago. I was a little trepidatious, because the last time I used his razor (in like 1979), I came away looking like I had been in a slasher film.
After a lot of looking at the available DE razors, I decided on the long handled Vikings Blade "Vulcan", because it seemed like the best fit going by the other reviews and also because it would come with their more mild blade that is recommended for beginners.
One side note here: I like a company that has confidence in their product and Vikings Blade even recommends two of their competitor's razor blades for when you are ready for a more aggressive blade.
That's confidence!
I also ordered the Vikings Blade "White Knight" shave brush.
So far here is the review;
I showered first and then rubbed some pre-shave oil on my face. I whipped up my Poraso shave soap with my White Knight brush. it went on pretty much the same as I have seen in videos, so I reached for the razor.
I have been practicing the 30 degree angle with my disposable for a few days so I went with what seemed a pretty good angle (with no pressure and the razor resting on my face) I went through my first pass (downward strokes) allowing the weight of the razor to do the work, noting a few tugs, but no grabs and overall it went pretty smooth, and most importantly no nicks or cuts or irritation.
I re-lathered and went for the second pass (horizontal strokes, from ears to mouth direction)and it was also going very well until I had one small nick in one of my trouble areas. I finished my neck very carefully and then felt my progress and went for the third pass (upward against the grain). In the end I had the one small nick (I attribute it to needing more practice with the razor), but otherwise the shave was great. My face felt great and I did not need another shave for two days, with almost no stubble during that time.
Best of all, Even with that, I had absolutely no razor burn at all. If you see some reddish area in my pic, that is leftover from my shave 2 days before.
So when it comes to recommendations I would absolutely say that the Vikings Blade "Vulcan" razor and the "White Knight" brush are both top notch and met all of my expectations. I would also recommend the Poraso shave soap and the Cremo Post Shave Balm. It was very cooling and had a nice scent at a reasonable cost.
As far as the VB mild razors...so far so good, they are very good for practice, but I will be ordering a variety pack of razors so that I can try out different brands and hone in on the one that will suit me best.
Best of luck with your shaving experiences and remember...

Don'T PreSS on The RazoR!!
I look at several brands on Amazon and landed on Vikings because frankly I liked the look and I like Vikings. I bought the Vikings Stand, bowl and Brush. At first, I was a little disappointed by the blade. Thus I wanted to try Merkur 23c which is the highest reviewed DE on Amazon. I thought that maybe the Vikings DE was just inferior. But ultimately I came to love the Vikings more than the Merkur and I sent it back. This review will compare the two against each other.
For the purpose of this review, I want to state that I used Merkur's blades in both the Vikings DE and Merkur. Astra, Feather, and Merkur just make better blades than Vikings, maybe that will change in the future, but for now, to the strongest goes my money. I use Taylor of Old Bond Steet Sandalwood shaving cream, lather, and wood preshave oil and post shave balm. The first thing you will notice when you compare the Vulcan with the Merker 23c, is that the Vulcan is much much bigger and a lot heavier than the Merker. This is a real plus for me, it makes it a lot easier to shave because you don't have to put much pressure on the blade. You let the weight of the Vulcan do it for you. This is a clear winning feature.
Another really important feature that places the Vulcan over the Merkur 23c at least is the butterfly feature. On the Vulcan DE, to change the blade all you have to do is unscrew the bottom and the head of the razor opens up. It takes not 5 seconds to change a blade. Merkur 23c is three pieces, and no matter how many videos I watched or my technique it is not easy to change the blade. DE blades are far sharper than anything most people touch. I gave myself quite the cut changing Merkur 23c and that hurt for a solid week. With the butterfly head, you just don't have the same risk.
Finally, for the most important part, how well it shaves. I want to state that the Merkur gives a good shave, especially for a beginner. But the Vulcan DE wins out for me because it is the more aggressive shave. IF you compare the Vulcan with the Merkur, you will notice that the Merkur has a lot longer guard. The great thing about is that it makes it much harder to cut or nick yourself. There is a lot less gap between the blade and the guard. Whereas with the Vulcan, the guard is much shorter and the gap is much bigger. This leaves the blade much more exposed and a lot closer shave. I would often find myself shaving first with the Merkur and unable to get a close shave. Whereas you could just to finish up with the Vulcan and catch what the Merkur missed.
In summary, both the Vikings Vulcan and Merkur 23c are good razors. But I like a more aggressive shave that makes my face as smooth as a baby's ass. So if you are a beginner and aren't' willing to try something like the Muhle R41 which is extremely aggressive, then this razor if for you. With time and techniques you can eliminate the nicks and get a very good shave.
