Great Mobile Machine and a nice companion to my Husqvarna Viking Designer EPIC & Diamond

Great Mobile Machine and a nice companion to my Husqvarna Viking Designer EPIC & Diamond
This machine wasn't available here at the time I was looking, but I was able to find it on sale during the pandemic mid-May (at Joann) and just couldn't pass up the deal. It just arrived this week and I finally unpacked it today.I wanted to get an affordable utility machine to be used as my mobile sewing machine when away from home, like working on a project at my mother's or friend's house, a quilting class, or when I show others how to make face masks with a filter pocket, etc. The stylish way this Jade 20 packs up without a separate carrying case or cover, really appealed to me.Although I did look into the Jade 35, I really don't need another embroidery capable sewing machine, otherwise, I would have gotten that, but I would certainly recommend it for someone looking to get into machine embroidery but needs to stay within a tight budget.....and you absolutely do not need to buy the expensive Viking software that many of us have. You can use just about any embroidery software on the market that fits your budget (i.e. Embird, SewWrite, SewArt, SewWhat Pro, Wilcom Hatch, etc.). There's also a free embroidery program at the Husqvarna Viking web site that although limited, is still a pretty good program.Husqvarna Viking brand machines have always been my favorite since 1980 when I got my first one as a teen (a 5710 in the old 'Viking burgundy red' color). I've traded up over the years to my current sewing and embroidery machine, the Husqvarna Viking Diamond. All of my Vikings have been made in Sweden, until this Jade 20 (Made in Thailand) so I'm curious how the quality compares. So far, it seems comparable. The Jade is definitely a lighter weight sewing machine than my older Vikings, as well as the Viking Diamond, making it perfect for mobility....the primary reason I got it. I still have some older 6000 series model Vikings that are mostly metal and quite heavy. I really don't like lugging those around, but they come in handy for teaching others how to sew or someone I know needs to borrow a sewing machine.Today, I've been going through many of the stitches on the Jade 20, including the decorative and the quilting stitches, plus winding bobbins, and getting used to the overall lay-of-the-land and so far, I'm quite impressed!Sure, the Jade 20 doesn't have all the bells and whistles on my Diamond, which I don't expect it to have (i.e., embroidery, auto presser foot lift, touch screen, auto tension, etc), but the Jade 20 is an excellent lower priced alternative with all the features someone who sews needs, without breaking the bank.As for other reviews stating that threading the needle is difficult and the presser foot area is cramped, that is perplexing to me because it doesn't seem all the different from my Viking Diamond. The needle threader works well, although it isn't quite as smooth to operate as my Diamond, it certainly does work effectively. But you do need to be sure the needle is raised to the highest position or the threader won't line up with the eye of the needle. In other words, the needle threader does not stay inline with how high or low the needle is-the needle threader position is stationary up and down and only works when the needle is in the highest position. This is the same and normal process as other machines with a needle threader. From what I've seen so far using the Jade 20 myself and watching Sara's YouTube videos under 'Heirloom Creations', I'd say it's a great value for the price point.UPDATE September 2020:A relative of mine really loved this Jade 20 when she used mine during a face-mask sewing class I taught, but she really couldn't afford to get one, so I gifted her mine and she absolutely loves it!As for me, I still needed a mobile sewing machine so right after I gifted my Jade 20, I stumbled upon a great deal on a barely used Jade 35, which is almost the same as the Jade 20, except it also does embroidery. Three months later, I stumbled upon another amazing deal, but this time on a barely used Viking EPIC, so my Viking Diamond is now my secondary sewing and embroidery machine, and the Jade 35 is my mobile machine. My relative is still loving her Jade 20.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice product for the price.

Blew off the top of the first bobbin I wound. Took at least 5 tries to get it right. When paper piecing and you can't chain stitch, the first stitch messes up. I was already familiar with the needle threader, so it wasn't a problem.
