1.0 out of 5 starsDidn't work at all for Alaskan Malamutes
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2023
First, let me point out that CapStar is NOT a preventative! It is supposed to kill adult fleas on the dog but it doesn't prevent them from getting fleas again - not does it kill anything but adult fleas, which means you still need something (monthly topical or oral flea medicine) to kill the eggs and the larvae or those will obviously mature into adults and you and your pet are stuck in the vicious cycle.

That being said, here is my first and only experience with CapStar. We have never had flea issues until this year. I have two Alaskan Malamutes - one 105 pound "short hair" and one 110 pound long hair. Clearly, they both have the Malamute thick double coat. We usually like K9 Advantix II for flea treatment/prevention. Early this summer, I bought the Amazon brand that has the same ingredients. As K9 Advantix Ii. It arrived with no expiration date and I'm not sure if that's the reason that it doesn't seem to work, that it's not the same formula or perhaps the fleas have become resistant... or it's just an especially overwhelming year for fleas. Either way, I thought by trying this first and THEN putting their prevention on within a day or two would work. I gave them each a CapStar pill, nervously watched for adverse reactions and thanked God they didn't seem to have any issues. It also didn't seem to help the flea situation - they continued scratching and biting as before. Because I didn't want to give them back to back, I waited for about 48 hours before giving another CapStar to each of them. Once again, no reaction but the scratching and chewing hasn't subsided at all nine hours later. In fact, I almost feel like both times, they are actually scratching more after the CapStar tablets?? It makes me wonder if it is actually not killing the fleas but just irritating them and making them more active and angry (or at least more hungry LOL). I really needed this to work and was hoping that in conjunction with a topical preventative, we would be able to both kill AND prevent reinfstation with a two prong attack. Sadly, we are just out more money, time and effort.

I should mention that a long side this effort, I treated the bedrooms that have carpet (the rest of the house has hard floors and we have a no-knap, outdoor rug I'm the living room because it can be power washed) Anyway, I sprayed the Vet's Best Flea & Tick Home Spray on the carpet, mattresses and washed bedding & blankets. It's difficult to get every possible location that a flea could be hiding but I was fortunate to be able to see a flea and spray directly on it. The Vet's Best spray killed it in less than 10 seconds. It does say that you can apply it to your dog's coat and rub it in down to their skin. That sounded too unrealistic with their thick coats but because it is natural, smells really nice IMO and obviously works, I think I will still attempt that on most of their cost/body, add Diatomaceous Earth to the floors, dog beds, rugs, etc and THEN try reapplying topical prevention. I just have to decide of I am going to use some of the 8 tubes I have left of the Amazon brand or try something else - might pick up the Frontline Plus that's on sale at Costco tomorrow.

This is a very solid purchase because of numerous reasons. Firstly, no prescription is needed which has made it easy for me to buy. The tablet is designed for medium to large dogs, which is perfect for my pet. It's also super easy to administer. Possibly, its best feature is its fast-acting nature, which starts working in mere minutes. Great buy for sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Effective, but Short-Lasting

I had no luck with topical treatments, and the chemicals in the drops and sprays were nauseating to smell. I could no longer get the Comfortis prescription pill after my vet retired, so I gave this pill a try with skepticism. IT WORKED! My dog was infested with at least 100-200 fleas when I fed him the pill. After about 30 minutes the fleas on my dog were still alive, but they were starting to be paralyzed. They were moving slowly and couldn't jump very well. Then after an hour I still saw a lot of fleas crawling around, and I didn't think they would be eliminated. After 3 hours, there wasn't a single flea on my dog. I saw a few dead ones on the floor that shriveled and dried up into dust. After 24 hours, there were a few survivors in the carpet, but now after 32 hours I don't see a single flea in the house. The only side effect was fatigue. My dog slept in a few extra hours this morning, but he seems to be normal and happy now. He's still itching the bites and rashes from the fleas. I will update this review if/when I see the fleas return. The product does not kill the larva, so they might return after a few weeks.
UPDATE: The fleas returned after 3 days. You have to use this product along with a flea bomb to eliminate them. The package says you can keep giving your dog the pill every day, but no one would choose to keep buying a box every week or two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works really well with no adverse side effects for my dogs

I have been using this stuff for years. I live in an area where fleas are a big problem, so it’s not possible to solely rely on natural remedies Which is what I would prefer for my dogs.

I decided on capstar after doing lots of research. I love that this product is safe enough to use on small puppies and pregnant dogs unlike a lot of other flea medications.

I did have to use a topical in addition to this product last summer, my non-breeding dogs, because even with treatment they were bringing back to the house since we have been back on only capstar Again with no issues since.

I have never had an issue with this medication. I’ve given it to all of my dogs, even my pregnant dogs or puppies. I have also given it to numerous rescues that have been on our farm temporarily. We have never experienced any adverse side effects from it.

They either changed the formula or fleas in my area are getting stronger. About 3 years ago I used this product on my 2 big dogs. They had a bad infestation. I gave them each one treatment and the fleas were completely eliminated, I was very impressed. Now I have only one dog and after 3 years of not seeing a flea she became infested again. I've now given her all 6 pills and baths but the fleas keep coming back. Granted the pills have eliminated most of the fleas but there are still plenty left to start multiplying again. I contrast with the first time I used the product when a single pill eliminated all the fleas and this time after 6 pills the fleas remain.

Kills fleas quickly. Make note that this is not a preventative. But we use it for maintenance if fleas get bad as we don't give flea pills year round since it's only bad a couple months out of the year. We do one pill once a week for 3 weeks and also spray the house with Bengal flea spray and we have no problems.

I've been very happy with this flea treatment. The fact that it comes with 6 doses is fantastic! It's effective, affordable, and super easy to administer. I love that it's safe for dogs and puppies, and I don't even need a vet prescription. It's extremely convenient. I would highly recommend this product to dog owners.

After doing some research, I decided to buy this and I'm glad I did. The product comes with 6 doses, making it easy to administer. It starts working quickly, and it's safe for dogs and puppies. The best part? No vet prescription needed! That being said, the effects could last a bit longer and the pricing could be more affordable. Regardless, it's a good product overall.

I've been quite pleased with the results. What I admired the most was how fast-acting this treatment was. It's also very easy to administer. However, my pooch didn't seem to like the taste very much and I wish the effects could last a bit longer. Despite these minor issues, it's a good product overall.
